It's sad, but when I think of naming my future kids, I always want them to have a song for their name.

Some people are giving their kids offbeat names so that they'll appear in Google searches more easily. I have a very common name (first and last) and often thought it would have been nice to have a slightly unsual first name. But having a common name gives you more privacy. I've never Googled myself, but if I did, I'd probably turn up hundreds of people by the same name.

Of course, a name like Indiana Jones would have the net effect--thousands of sites that would take someone especially nosy and persistent to sort through.

And yes, "Indiana, like the state" should clear up how to spell it, but frequently, it won't. I have resumes from people seeking secretarial positions who couldn't copyedit a comic strip.

My last name actually is Jones. You have no idea how many times people have asked "so, that's J-o-n-z?"

Good gosh I did a google search on my name and found a picture of my grandmother's gravestone on findagrave.com with the obituary I wrote for her! Who gives these people the go ahead to do such things?! Geez!

This is why there are laws allowing minors to get a "divorce" from the custody of their parents. Still,I suppose if you're going to name your child after a character by a hollywood corporate hack it could be worse; you could be named R2-D2.

We could, of course, make certain people legally incompetent to name a child. They have to pass the names by their parents/grandparents for approval first.

In all fairness, I have been kind of a public person in my area so it doesn't surprise me to see things I have written or said still out there.

No anonymity for me, either - I have a Swedish forename from one branch of the family, and an Irish surname with a bit of an odd spelling. It's probably safe to say it's unique. Couple that with the fact I've published on a popular history subject in my field and my name is sometimes put out in press releases etc as a contact for museum projects and...well...I'm not too hard to find.

I've never minded my first name although it's not too common in Australia (not unique, though) - the spelling does give people problems, though, as there are a couple of more common forms of it. I can usually tell what mailing list people are using when mail arrives by which variety of spelling they use on both my names. I can understand, however, why some people would develop an "issue" with an unusual name and change it to Jack or Jane at the earliest possible time. I don't get narky with people who get it wrong (I'm pretty indifferent to it), but if you're sensitive on things like that it would be incredibly grating to spend a lifetime patiently spelling out your name for folks, only to have them get it wrong anyway. It makes emailing a problem when your name is part of your address! I've taken to pre-empting difficulties by pointing out the surname has a tricky twist when I spell it for people.

It has always struck me as either ignorance or arrogance on the part of parents to name their child something that will give the child grief as they grow older. It is one thing to change a spelling, etc. but deliberately using your child for entertainment seems to show that the parent is less concerned with the child's well being than their own egos.

For Indiana, I also think it sounds like a girls name, well, linked with the last name Jones.... it might be a little bit strange....
