Nice hat. I know I love my Grey Squatter. I love the extra sun protection while still in a fedora style.

I'm glad that I have inspired so many new Akubra purchases. One of the reasons I got mine is I always hold off on getting something, and then for one reason or another that thing is no longer available. I was so afraid of e-mailing hatsdirect and getting a reply like "Sorry, Akubra has gone out of business. We can't get you that hat". At least I have mine now.

I've seen a few photos in this forum of guys in fedoras holding pistols. Is there a natural connection between the two that I am missing?

New magazine "Men's Hats & Guns"

The connection is only there if you see it. Many may remeber fedoras and guns from the police dramas or ganster films, our favorite adventure stories often included hat wearin' gun totin' men of the world.

It just isn't mandatory to own a hat and own a gun, ... yet.;)

Gun safety is the responsibilty of any own that handles a gun, so i will always suggest: take a safety-handling-gun use class when possible.:fedora:

Just received my new Akubra Squatter in Moonstone Gray. I would never thought of this hat had I not seen Fatdutchman's great posts. I had to change sizes (too big), but David Morgan was very accommodating. I am still working on the bash. I want a simple teardrop top with a center dome and a front pinch that is slightly sharper, narrower and longer than usual. I am hesitant about getting my feet (and my hat) wet in the shaping process, but I know some water and/or steam will definitely be needed, especially with the center dome. I think the Squatter will become a favourite of mine.
P.S. Fatdutchman, what kind of revolver are you packin'? I use an Old Model Ruger Super Blackhawk.

Convinced...

Fatdutchman,
Your pictures have clinched it for me! I was thinking of the Bushman or the Squatter for my next hat. Ordered the Squatter from David Morgan in moonstone today after looking at your pics. Hope you don't mind but I will be trying to steal, uh, replicate your bash.:D It's exactly the style I imagined for a high crown.

Regards,

My little digital camera just cannot capture the color of the hat. It's a much prettier color than this.

Like I said, I'm more pleased with this particular hat than any other I've ever put on my head! ;)

Really awesome hat...you wear it well!

Thanks to the Dutchman!

Happy New Years Folks!

Dutchman, that hat is sweet!:eusa_clap
I was likewise looking at the Squatter. The block looks really straight
and it wouldn't take much to cover the vent with the ribbon if you wanted
to. Very nice. Where did you get it?

I have to confess that I kinda went nuts and am "bringing in the new year", having just ordered 2 Akubra hats from Hatsdirect!

Thanks to Dutchman, I've got a Tawny Fawn Fed on its way and "with all this discussion of Open Road's", an Akubra Campdraft is coming as well!

Man it's nice when the Canuckistan Rubel is worth something!
You can buy things without having to hit the line of credit eh!
Jenny at Hatsdirect was fantastic to deal with and she's sending me some
other darker brown ribbon for the Tawny Fed, just in case I want to try a higher contrast look.

2008 is gonna be great!

Cheers and Happy New Year Folks

Great looking hat. I have the same hat except in grey (moonstone). I'll also say David Morgan was great to deal with. I ordered it on Christmas Eve and only had a very short delay because of it. I'm still tinkering with my bash and trying to get accustomed to the high crown. That hat looks great on you and makes me appreciate mine even more.

My DM Akubra Squatter came with the most amazing reverse-taper/bell shape. Oh, it was so nice. It may just have been a stroke of luck, or they may all be that way, I don't know.

I could do without the little metal chinstrap hooks, but they don't bother me all that much.

The Squatter is NOT as tall as the Campdraft or the Federation.

I cannot recommend this hat (and David Morgan) highly enough.

I second (or third, or whatever) the point. I've bought an Adventurer and a Sydney from David Morgan in the past month and love them both.

I just ordered an Adventurer myself. How does it compare to the Federation?

I haven't had my hands on a Federation. They look similar in shape to me, but the Adventurer is priced in between the standard and the deluxe Federation, so I guess there is some difference in the felt itself.

Not really. DM is always higher in price and don't forget hats direct also is more expensive by $20 or more once you add shipping from Aussie. There appears to be subtle differences and the adventurer has different measurements, but overall very similar. For felt I'd rank it about the same as the Imperial Fed.

Adventurer Cost

RockBottom:

Once you factor in shipping the Adventurer and Federation are virtually the same price. I already have a Federation so I thought I'd order an Adventurer and report back on the difference if any. As far as I can tell the Adventurer has a lower crown (5.5" vs. 6") and a slightly wider brim, but it looks like the felt is the same imperial quality.

But I have to wait another 5 days or so for my Adventurer to arrive, so I thought I'd check if you had seen a difference.

BTW, this will also be my first attempt at bashing which I was concerned about, but decided to try anyway after all the encouraging posts here.
