My Johnny Depp Hat!

It certainly does not feel like any wool I have ever felt, it appears to be legit furfelt, but it was not treated with any sort of water deterant or anything like that, nothing to even help it keep its shape so maybe that has something to do with it.
I was actually about to buy another from the same guy an hour ago but somebody made an offer to him for 10 bucks more...
Thing is, I dunno where I would find a hat the same style as this. :(

Welcome to the Lounge, Lonnie, and I'm sorry to hear about the mishap with your new hat.

But that said...

Check the online vendors here at the Lounge! It's really not that unusual of a hat. Myself, I'd be a little reluctant to spend that much on another hat from the same vendor after the problems with this one, or at least until I really knew if the hat was a good bargain for the price. For what you spent, you should be able to find a good quality hat from any number of vendors, or come close to the price of a custom. Plus your current hat might just need reblocking and rebashing.

Myself, I'd be questioning the quality of a hat that's being advertised as a "Johnny Depp" style hat and not as a fedora. Personally, the write up talking about how "cool" it looks, and it looks just like what Depp wears...my impression is a lot of build-up that really says nothing about the hat itself, just trying to catch a little reflected glory off the "Depp persona."

As I said before I have a hat that is fir felt that did the same as yours. For the price you are paying the hat should protect you for the elements, not you protecting it form the elements.

If you want to stay at the same price point you are at now with Rabbit try http://www.penmanhats.com/Home_Page.html I do not have one of their hats but everything I have read here and on COW (club Obi Wan) seem to indicate they are really good, hand made, hats. Just send him a picture of what you want done and see what he has to say. Heck you get a $25 discount for being a lounge member. That brings the price of his "Hand made Non-Indy hat using pure rabbit felt" down to an even $200. and for an extra $50 you can get 100%beaver.

Someone posted a thread awhile back about a place in Canada that offered the 'Johnny Depp' fedoras in wool or felt. This must be the same 'hatter'

Might have been me. Lonny originally posted about this hat in either the new hat or Ebay thread. Do an advanced search on Ebay for the seller "Caliqo." They have wool felt "Billy Jack" hats for $199.00 (!) and Lonny's Johnny Depp hat for about $250. The Depp hat at that price is supposed to be fur felt. The "hatter" claims that each hat is "custom made" to the buyer's size. However, that entails the buyer providing a head measurement and the 'Hatter" sends a S, M, L or XL based on the measurement.

I would not buy from this seller when a new Akubra in exact sizing (including 7 5/8 or 61 cm) is under $100. I don't know about Penman hats. My Akubra and my old and new Stetsons have been soaked in rain and snow multiple times without any damage. I follow the usual instructions for drying the hat, i.e., reshape the crown and brim if necessary, don't use any artifical heat, turn out the sweat band or use another support to hold the hat while drying.

I find this thread a little wierd. The same points - over priced hat, possible solutions for the brim damage, lower priced quality options - were made after the original post in the other thread.

So what's up?

Yeah. "Wow, I paid hundreds for a hat that looks marginal and then actually went to pot when it got wet. And now I'm going to pay top dollar to get it worked on! And the hat is soooo cool. It's just the best thing. I'm going to go back and buy another one now..."

It was weird the first time I saw a thread along these lines a few week ago. Now this. [huh]

For that amount you can find plenty. You could probably buy a Borsalino (which is what it looks like Depp actually wears) for that.

Didn't see the similar post in another thread as I don't cruise there too often. But I did post the description from the vendor site about this hat further up in this thread....pretty clear it's hare today, (messed up tomorrow).

Yep, interests me about getting another one. Thowing good money after bad. As others have mentioned, odd. Well, "wierd". Shop around. Like
Inusuit said, Akubra Bogart or Fedora will save you $147 right off the top.

AND, if you do have at least $250 (added shipping) burning a hole in your pocket, as Kaosharper posted, for that much coin do it right and get a Borsa.

Actually, Lonny, for another $55 have Art Fawcett make you a version of this hat, custom fitted to your head and made of pure beaver felt that will not only stand up to the rain, but will last long enough to hand down to your grandchildren. You'll have to wait for 6 weeks, but it is the Summer, so when its cool enough to wear again you'll have it. The quality will be 10 times what this hat was for just a little more money.

I wish I recommended Art Fawcett. That would have been smart.

Oh wait. I did! Back on post #9 two days ago with a link.

Kaosharper I am intrigued! :D
Can you send me info on how to contact this Art Fawcett?

Thank you very much guys. :)
I feel like an idiot for spending so much on garbage. :(

Live and learn. Take a look at the "Art Fawcett Hall of Fame" thread to see examples of his work. My avatar is a "Maltese Falcon" style hat he made for me.

Johnny did suggest this a few posts back, so you can see in what high regard Art is held around here.

Sorry, Lonny can't help. But great advice here on getting as far from the guy you bought this "hat" from as possible. Custom makers like Art are a good bet, but on my budget I like cruising the classifieds here or ebay and buying beautiful old lids of top quality for under a hundred bucks.

Inexperienced, yes - and I've been there. But an idiot would not have recognized that there is a better way and sought out the information.

I do hope you and others are careful when sellers who capitalize on trends are casting their spells. It would be nice if fans of the period movies who are moved to emulate the characters are able to find quality merchandise.

That's how I do it, but admittedly being a size 7 helps a lot with available offerings at low prices.

As did others in the first thread. One more time around the barn and I will begin to suspect that my leg is being pulled.

The Lounge has, in my limited experience, been remarkably free of trolls who find amusement abusing the good nature of our little community. This may be an exception, albeit harmless other than the waste of band width.

Oh guys, one more thing.

I have vista on my computer, so my e-mail is not really being compliant with me. So I cannot find his e-mail adress and was wondering if somebody would be kind enough to tell me. :)

Thanks again.

Lonny.
