My first „real“ Denim Jacket - Iron Heart Type III overdyed, 23oz

For quite some time I was looking into alternatives to leather jackets. After being very happy with my higher quality jeans I started to look into denim jackets already back in Germany a year ago. Regularly I went to Burg & Schild in Berlin to try on jackets from Japan Blue, Pure Blue Japan, 3Sixteen and Sugar Cane to Name a few. Each time I left disappointed that there is no jacket that fits my torso, mainly my long arms. I already thought about finding someone who does customized denim jackets.

This weekend I more or less accidentally I passed by Self Edge located at the lower East Side of Manhattan. I’ve read about the store before but never made it in. Without real hope to finally solve my „problem“ I stopped and walked in.

Nick greeted me friendly and asked whether he could help while I was browsing through the denim jackets on their rack. My attention was grabbed by a dark, hefty feeling jacket (I guess I’m biased by my CXL jackets). Nick handed me a 44 which already raised my hopes to finally find a jacket that fits. Unfortunately not perfect and still a little short in the arms. I tried a 46 - the jacket was not significantly wider in the body, but arm and body length were spot on for my personal taste. I learned I was looking at an Iron Heart jacket which was the result of a collaboration with Self Edge. The main difference to the standard Type III is a lengthened body (2 inch) and hand pocket slids. Of course Iron Heart was not new to me, but I didn’t know that they are inspired by motorcycle gear and thus come with longer arms than other jackets (also about 2 inch).

That was exactly what I needed! Nick congratulated me that I fell in love with the most expensive denim jacket in the store. Honestly, I am still in shock that a denim jacket could cost more than USD 500, but from what I heard, Iron Heart is worth it.

Before swamping you with pictures some specifications.
23oz unsanforized Indigo Selvedge Denim, Garmented dyed with black fugitive pigment dye that will slowly come off to release electric blue fades, right hand twill, American cotton.

I am very excited how the jacket will develop and really love the details of the jacket. Look at the indigo residue on the snaps!

As someone with longer arms I still ended up selling all but one of the Iron Heart shirts I've bought as, as you say, the larger sizes seem to vary little in width but much more in length and the larger sizes were just too long for me, if I'm paying that much for a shirt then the fit has to be spot on.

Thats a score though and a great fit! (I do love their jeans too.)

Nice jacket and a great fit. Should last a long time too, I’d think.

I have the opposite fitting issue... nothing ever fits me because I need a few inches shorter than standard. Anything that fits my shoulders hangs to my fingertips!

The only other option would be to steal it or accepting not to find a fitting denim jacket ;)

I visited Self Edge in San Francisco - the prices were eye watering......I'm a tight Scotsman - so wrong store for me I guess!

However, shortening things should be easier than trying to make in longer...probably not with a denim jacket;)

IH sizing can be a tough nut to crack. They typically overshoot sleeve length. It's kind of their thing to do that I guess. I'm excited to see how my IH storm rider fits...arriving today! Nervous anticipation is great?
