Interesting read, thanks Eric. What does the leather smell like?

AFAIK the easiest route for us is still Aliexpress. Taobao is for the Chinese domestic market only, and Aliexpress was set up for the international Chinese market (of the Alibaba Group). A few sellers that are on Aliexpress sell on eBay as well.

When buying off Aliexpress, you have to use your own judgement regarding the integrity of the seller's business. I'm sure there's lots of honest sellers there, but there are dishonest ones as well. Aliexpress, although somewhat comparable to Amazon, doesn't have the same standards for sellers as Amazon does (both can't screen out crooked sellers entirely, but Amazon is apparently better at doing it). At the same time, the rates and conditions for sellers are said to be better on Aliexpress which seems to be one of the reasons why Aliexpress is expanding with some success into markets outside China, rivaling Amazon.

The leather doesn’t really have a smell. Certainly not the kind of off-gassing smell my new suede Gap jacket came with.
This is not high quality leather, but it works for me as I like the style, but won’t be wearing it daily. It’s more of a statement piece that will come out once or twice a month.

I took my steamer to it, and now it’s really starting to look good:

Those actually look surprisingly good. Almost uncomfortably good.

You can say that again.

And I was telling y'all our fancy jackets ain't gonna be nothing special no more once the Chinese get their hands on 'em properly. I mean, the LL knockoffs even have the patch wings logo! All the jackets look really amazing.

I am Chinese, I have not yet touched those jacket because the price is unbelievably low which is really scary.

The price of the jacket from taobao site is roughly $230, and seller claims the leather is Vegetable tanned.....

That looks sooooo good! Not just good in comparison to what you paid for it. But actually competing with jackets that cost 5 times more.
Seriously tempted to get one for myself now. What kind of dye did you use?
I’d like to know the handydye recipe as well as be provided a link on Ali for it. I couldn’t find it searching the maker name.

The prices are definitely SCARY low! I am REALLY tempted to get one of those Kadoyas. That one you have looks awesome in the pics. I am also a little worried to order something directly from China.
Unfortunately, the size Kadoya offers no bigger than 42( 3L) which is exactly my size, their jackets either made in China or Korea, mine is made in China, I would spend 1k for jacket like this.

If only you are as handy as Mike with the dye. Please ignore those veg-tanned, top grain description. At this price range, you are getting 'genuine' couch leather that you can currently find at Home Depot.
IMO the suede denim type jackets looks to be the best bet. I have a Bronson suede type 1 and there isn't much noticeable difference between a USD100 Taobao suede type 1 and a RRL one.
