The fourth Dr Who wore the plush felt hat from 1976 (bottle green) to 1981 (burgundy). He originally wore another HJ hat in a basic sooth brown felt in 1975.

The Doctor came to this hat at the end of their fashion. I remember that soft, wide brimmed hats were very fashionable in the early 1970's, generally with men who identified as literary or theatrical players.

Some actually were actors and writers. Many were just wannabes - the artist manque. The Doctor's costume was meant to be influenced by Toulouse Lautrec's portrait of Astride Bruant - including the scarf - so the look was inspired by a 19th century European arts style.

Generally a poet style hat suggests an effete and somewhat languid persona, not a dynamic, pragmatic, archeologist, art thief.

Truman Capote wore a wide brimmed soft felt hat for many years too.

The other people who wore fluffy hats like this in 1971 were pimps...
Thats me "effete and languid" though I don't have a stable of women at my disposal...

Green has its own thread, but I’ve been seeing some great blue hats lately. Ya got to love a blue hat. Show us what you’ve got and what ribbons work with your shade of blue.

My first is a modern Selentino Sterling by Tonak.

This hat is going first because I found it a new home on eBay and it’s being boxed up tonight. Not a bad hat, but I’m thinning the herd!

Bespoke made by Esther, she suggested a Strat-like shape and hit the nail right on the head. It topped off my wedding outfit to perfection, how it compliments my linen suit of similar colour. So versatile is it, that it's a perfect match for a summer blazer too.

I love blue hats. Blue is probably my favorite color for a hat. I've gone from none to four in short order. Clockwise from top left: My Washington Nationals give-away, Hats in the Belfry pork pie, Dobbs Rosebud, Stetson Frederick. View attachment 120084
Those are fabulous hats, and such a range of hues, I love them, compliments to you. The colour of the second and third is easily identifiable as navy blue, not so mine. To get the best example of a colour, photograph it outside. This shot of my navy Susquehanna fedora, actually looks black, but if I tell you that the jacket, which also looks black, is a navy blue Acquascutum blazer, you can see how artificial light distorts the colour.

I never thought to post this hat here. This is a Navy Blue Pendleton 3X Resistol Western that I converted to a fedora last year. The hat was originally gifted to me by Michael R. I took it completely apart and reworked it. I reused the original hat band and brim binding. I also reused the original red liner, size tag, and sweat band bow. I did have to put a new sweat band in it....

I wish I were able to make something like that.
No chance of learning, living in Mexico, though. I do get to bake beautiful porcelain crowns in the lab once in a while, but I think I would enjoy making hats more. More artistic freedom to do them as I wanted.

Sure you can. Read through the Conversion Corral thread. There's a lot of good info there. Buy yourself a few hat tools and materials, apply your desire to make hats, and you're in business.
