I saw him perform once in Georgia around '87 or '88 ... my family was vacationing in Florida and my brother had heard he was playing so we drove up to catch the show

Gary Stewart. Underrated in my opinion.
Yessss. Gary's family was originally from Kentucky, but settled in my parent's hometown of Ft. Pierce, FL when he was a youngster. That part of Florida has a long history of cattle, citrus and country living. Gary was a compatriot of Mel Tillis, another (recently deceased) Floridian. When I was younger working my way through college I worked for a local funeral home that held the funeral for Gary's sister who sadly had committed suicide. Unfortunately, Gary followed in her footsteps years later after the death ofhis wife from pneumonia. He has a high, lonesome voice and songs that fit the hard-living life he led. If you're in one of "those" moods, his songs and voice will break your heart.
Gary Stewart. Underrated in my opinion.
One of the all time greats! So many rock and rollers were influenced by him.
