From the film "Zou Zou" (1934) Josephine Baker sings "C'est lui" ("He's The One") one of Baker's most popular hits, and my favorite song from her!

One of her best songs. I have it on a CD. Somehow, I imagine Legionaires in their barracks listening to this record on a battered gramophone...

They sit or lay on their bunks smoking, cleaning their weapons, perhaps writing a letter, each lost in their own reverie as "Le Bakair's" siren song brings thoughts of another lifetime to this lonely outpost somewhere in Morocco. Then in the far corner of the barracks "Papa" Kurilovic, who had been with 2nd Company longer than anyone could remember, sits up and says, "You know, I met her once in Paris. She was so beautiful... " and a faint smile forms on his lips as he sits back puffing on his pipe. This is the first time anybody had ever seen Kurilovic smile, much less speak more than a few perfunctionary words. But they knew not to press him for details nor question his veracity. For this silent brooding man, recipient of the Croix de Guerre, was feared by all.

Great choices everyone!!!

Nice Calloway trademark jive unlike his more polished 1932 recording.

Gene Kardos Orchestra (Chick Bullock on vocal)"You're Such A Comfort To Me"

Gene Kardos and His Orchestra did well, despite everything, during the Depression years. The band was regularly packing the Gloria Palast, a restaurant
and dance hall on East 86th Street in the Yorkville area of Manhattan where Gene had grown up.
Here they all are in this fun photo at the Gloria Palast 1931 :)

Amazingly, he was only 18 when he made this recording.

Harry James 1938 "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams"

From Harry's first recording session as a leader, the band was made up of members of the Basie, Ellington, and Goodman bands. Included were Hershel Evans(Harry's all time favorite tenor sax), Dave Tough, Buck Clayton, and Jess Stacy.

Orquesta Tipica Francisco Canaro -- Poema (1934)
vocal by Roberto Maida

Cuando las flores de tu rosal,
vuelvan mas bellas a florecer,
recordarás mi querer,
y has de saber,
todo mi intenso mal.

De aquel poema embriagador,
ya nada queda entre los dos,
doy mi triste adiós,
sentiras la emoción,
de mi dolor...

(translation)
When the flowers of your rose garden,
bloom again ever so beautiful,
you'll remember my love,
and you will come to know,
all my intense misfortune.

Of that one intoxicating poem,
nothing is left between us,
I say my sad goodbye,
you'll feel the emotion,
of my pain...
