Normally I'd of posted the last three or so lids in the new hats or ebay auction threads but since these are a bit rare I thought to give them their own threads. If need be, bartenders, please move these appropriately.

Nice felt on this lovely old French chapeau

Hi Garrett. Folks might, in error, harbour the thought that, being close in proximity to grand old France would render the world of French hats more accessible.

Nothing is less certain.

I, for a fact, know nothing about French production.

Until I tore it apart for spare bits and pieces, I used to have a Flechet. It was too small, and at the time I performed that hideous deed, I didn't know the hat could have been easily stretched.
But that's not the point, here.

What do you guys know about ze French hat?

Mossant is known to me only through the famous posters.

BTW, Garret, your hat has a diminutive kind of elegance. Very French. Unlike the (I say) "macho" qualities of Stetson (G-man, Dick Tracy, et.al.), there appears here to be a more subtle approach.
Question: how is the quality of this hat? What's the time-frame?

Vintage French hats from Flechet & Mossant are treasures. I've owned 4 Mossants and 3 Flechets. All of these were well made with rich fur content in the felt. If you find one in your size BUY IT!

As to the Mossant pictured above, it is very soft and supple. I'm not sure of the age but I'd put it somewhere in the 40's/50's.

I've been looking for a Mossant in 7 1/2, 7 5/8, or even 7 3/4 for years. They are wonderful hats.
I had one in a smaller size that was posted on the lounge previously. It was made by Mossant and sold by Cavanagh which gives some idea of it's age. It is on it's way to Brad Bowers to join his Cavanagh collection.
