I haven´t seen so many girls vintage-styled around here, but I saw in some stores that they sold nice and not-so-nice repros... I got me beautifull blue Tap-Pants at H & M and love them :)

I have been seeing a lot more vintage 'inspired' clothing in stores lately. But still see more of the g-string showing, type outfits :( The bad thing I've noticed about some of these vintage inspired outfits, is that they just don't fit like real vintage clothing [huh]

I suspect that's mostly because the manufacturers have to cut their clothes for a generation of women who have no idea how to wear foundation garments -- it's impossible to reconcile a vintage fit with the let-it-all-hang-out ethos. So the best you can expect from them are pseudo-vintage details on modern-style bodies. Not the most attractive look, but at least they're trying.

agree...though I wish the quality was there. I did go to an outlet mall awhile back and found some really cute vintage inspired dresses for really cheap..but also, the fit wasn't all that bad either..I"ve got the pics, just gotta remember to post them soon!

Women's shoes are a case in point. It's the philosophy behind PAYLESS shoe stores. (Their slogan: "You could pay more ... but why?")

.

Funny you should say that, Marc. I just had a shoe repaired, and the cobbler said, "Shoes nowadays are junk."

I could pay more than $25 for a pair of shoes, and I do. Why? First, because I don't like my feet to hurt. Second, the more expensive shoes hold up better. I have a five-year-old pair of Clarks sandals that I now use as dance shoes. Even after five summers of wear and tear, they're more comfortable than my regular dance shoes that were about 1/3 the price.

Back on topic: I haven't seen many people wearing vintage around here. Even at a swing dance, you might see two or three people out of 200 wearing vintage.

Hello all,

Is it just me, or am I seeing more and more gals decking out in vintage wear?

I *WISH*... (coming from North Carolina)

Saw ladies dressed in vintage in person *one* time, at a Glenn Miller concert about 5 years ago, a mother and daughter TOTALLY decked out head to toe late 30s-early 40s, my Favorite era: Hair, makeup, fitted dresses, gloves, cool little hats with the netting in front... closest image I could find on google:

Nov8_020.jpg

at that point, I had NO idea that ANYONE anywhere in the world Ever wore Golden Era clothes, only had seen it in the old movies... I couldn't say a word, totally speechless, friends I was with did all the talking, I'm sure those ladies thought I was "special" Said to myself right then, till I die, I'll never be able to get them out of my head... I SO wish there would be more of that around here

I don't know if anyone has seen "Superman Returns" yet (it's so-so, just a dressed-up love story) - in it Parker Posey has a great wardrobe, vintage wise. Everyone else is sort of vintage-y, but she is over the top, with parasols and furs.

I love Parker Posey.

You know, I just saw that movie last Sunday. I noticed the vintage-inspired clothing, as well. I was just waiting for Superman or another guy to come out in a fedora, but alas, it never came to pass. :(

I am a big material snob, and you (or rather your wife) is one hundred percent correct. Fabric used in todays womens clothing is beyond awful. BEYOND!

Alright, Im back. :rage:

Mostly awful. I have seen some nice fabrics on the frocks at Barney's. However:

1. $5000 is out of my budget
2. I don't wear a size 00
3. Even if I had $5000 and wore a size 00 I have no where to wear the frock
4. The style isnt that great.

I've also noticed that vintage is harder and harder to find. I used to be able to walk into a store and find a rack of pristine 30's dresses (usually some in my size) that I could reasonably afford. Not anymore.

I haven't seen anyone wearing vintage (aside from events at Fort MacArthur) in my (red) neck of the woods.

Oh Lady Day, I love that red/blue patterned dress! I just don't trust Delia's to serve the best interest of curvier girls, but oh that is so cute.

I know isnt that dress precious!? I may have to steal that pattern ;)
Being a curvier gal myself, I must say, it is difficult to find stuff in their sizes, but they do have extended sizes, and I have found a couple nice things.

The problem with the "curvier girl" clothes is that it is in extremes. Either is hooch wear or grandma wear with very little in between. Dresses are usually either cut down to the navel or so weirdly cut that it doesn't look as though you have a shape. Very upsetting. I find a lot of great pieces but for dresses, skirts, I usually make them.

Torrid.com usually has some really cute rockabilly style clothing. They also tend to carry cute vintage inspired blouses.

I would love to dress vintage all or most of the time, but I have a very hard time finding things that will fit me. I'm curvy and don't have a 20 inch waist.

Tell me about it. That is when you get into sewing like Rosie and I.
We can give you some pointers :D

I was looking on there the other day and wishing I was curvier! They have some lovely stuff. I do, however have "plus size" feet! They have a lot of cute flats on there, I have to find a store when I am over on holiday.

Another great thing I've noticed is that in some clothes stores, the dresses for girls are getting more and more of the 'vintage inspired' look. My oldest daughter's dresses all look vintage..what's been so great is that she's really into this whole way of dressing also.:)

It is the same way here. We have a very small core group of people who wear vintage to swing dances. The majority usually just wear the typical mix of Abercrombie rags and too-low jeans.

The only event that really seems to bring out the vintage clothing is a big hangar dance we host here each October. It is a 1940s theme, but people translate that to include all eras - you'll see flappers and go-go girls running around amongst the WWII WACs. Quite interesting. lol

I know of a few people that dress vintage here, but most look like everybody else. Most of the girls don't even bother to dress up to go dancing, either (I can't believe the girls still trying to pull off "hobo chic" looks at dances--I can't imagine how hot they must be in a skirt, pants, long-sleeved shirt, and tank top.) However, this past week I did see a girl decked out 'Hollywood' style. I couldn't decide if she was a local girl or from out of town though :)

I will say that I get a lot of interest in my outfits from a wide variety of people--young teens and adults. It seems as though I am getting more positive reactions then ever before. Perhaps people are coming around to ladylike dressing again!

LadyDay, I remember getting those catalogs as a teen :)

I thought this sweater was adorable:

Maybe its just San Francisco, but Im running into them more and more often. Today, for instance, I was walking my dog down the street and I passed this lady who looked like she stepped right from church in the 1950s; navy long coat, calf length skirt, basic pumps, gloves, hat, handbag, broach. To the nines I tell you, and she couldnt have been more than 25!

Is this catching on?
Is this a welcome backlash to all the gut showing, low rise undie peeking, too tight wearing 'fashions' that are in today?

If so, do ya'll think this means the return of some class, faux or other wise, and do you see clothing being made of quality again?

I know, a lot to cover, but these coincidences Ive been noticing are too much to be just that.

Your thoughts?

LD
I've noticed that certain fashions labels are making "vintage" inspired clothing, but generally most of it's for "rockabilly'' look.

I do notice some girls and guys wearing vintage, but it depends on what they are into. I see this girl in the mornings and she is definately into the "vintage" look. She has this nice 1930's inspired black floppy hat that goes so well with what she wears. There is definately a 20's - 30's influence with her style. I'm seeing more couples or groups of people male and female wearing the 40's look. Its a fresh change compared to the norm and other subcultures like punk (as I live in alternative part of town-which is great. You see so many different types of people).

Even though i love seeing vintage inspired people around, I'd probably prefer it if not everyone got on the "bandwagon". It would lose its appeal and become the norm, even too "fashionable". When it's not so popular it makes you stand out in the crowd so to speak!!

What is good about the fashion industry picking up on the vintage look is finding peices that would fit right into my wardrobe. I've found some beauties. unfortunately it can get expensive.

Here's one site that is nice, but the prices are too high.
