Modern Singers, Classic Music?

...saw her first about seven or eight years ago. Shy. Cute. Unaware that she was the cat's meow. Small club in Georgetown (Blues Alley). We talked afterwards and she was sweet and nice and unassuming. (See the last album cover, below.) Her very early albums are the best... from 1995:

Although Diana has come into her own since her relationship/marriage to Elvis Costello, her original CDs are very cool and classy.

BTW, for all you Tony Benett fans, I've seen Diana and Tony team up twice in concert. AWESOME is the only word to describe the experience!

Diana is much better known in Canada.. She is from Naniamo BC..

I find Buble to be a lightweight. Krall is hot as hell. I listen to web radio "www.LIVE365.com". In particular "Sophisticated Sounds". Excellent mix of standards from the 40's up. Old and new singers both.

I have a feeling that Michael Buble, Diana Krall and Matt Dusk are much better known in their homeland, that being Canada..
We really do turn out some great ones but often they don't really make it "mainstream".. I have a friend that worked with Diana's mother many years ago and said they were an ever so nice family.. Sadly Diana's mother died of cancer in May 2002 at the age of 60..
I also think that Diana's friendship with Elton John helped her career alot too.
I love her too and am very proud to say she is from Canada..

is an interesting group I have 2 of their CDs- '33 and a third' and '66 and two thirds', not 100% classic Songbook but close. One of the ladies from Manhattan Transfer sings a few tunes with them.

Renee Olstead is pretty good too. The 2 cds I have are self titiled and "by Request" both have sultry sounds from a young lady on her way.

Another neat cd is the soundtrack from the movie "Delovely" here are some great versions of the Cole Porter tunes by modern signers. Allanis Morisette is a hoot doing "Let's Do It" and Sheryl Crow is extraordinary. The gent that sings "What is This Thing Called Love" is exquisit.

Oh my it was fabulous! He's really quite the entertainer. Cute, funny, and oh that voice!!!! He even went into the audience and took a picture with these 2 cute little girls. At the end, he thanked everyone for buying tickets, even in such an economically hard time, especially since some of his entertainer friends have had to cancel concerts due to not enough ticket sales. I thought that was really sweet. If I had the chance to see him again, I probably would go. Afterwards, we (2 co-workers and I) went to the Scat Jazz Lounge in Fort Worth.

Cabinetman, thanks for the birthday wishes. You have a birthday coming up too, if I remember correctly. Happy Early Birthday!

P.S. You have a very nice singing voice. I enjoyed the youtube clip.

I hated almost every single song in that film. Horrible renditions. I am not alone, most people I know who are into vintage music felt the same. It was so sad as they could have done a great job if they had only had a musical director who had the knowledge and the desire.

It's all a matter of taste. I happen to like my old songs performed in a more authentic style. I thought that Delovely was a waste of time, except for the costuming had a few flashes of correctness.

Other people might be happy with it, but it annoyed me.

I think you're being rather sensitive. If we were discussing a subject I knew nothing about, I probably would not have bothered to post. Since I do have a decent knowledge of music of the time, and have an opinion, I thought it was OK to mention my opinion.

Until this post you did little to quantify the negative reaction. How were the songs so un-authentic? So many of these songs have been Arranged in different styles over the last 60-80 years that many of us would be hard pressed to say WHAT IS AUTHENTIC. What are the quintessential versions of these songs that are so Authentic?

I am not saying you know nothing I am saying you did little to give us a background for such a vehement position.

IS music Objective or Subjective? If you say you like a certain band and I say i hate that band but give little reasons for the position, it is little more than a yes no argument no substance. You could be complaining that they sounded un-authentic because it did not sound like it was a scratchy 78.

Here is a CD I ENJOY and I am being told it's a worthless POS. What exactly were you looking for in this since they disappointed you so much?

She's interesting...good. From myspace I thought what a great, old-timey sound. I almost wanted to hear hiss, too. I followed her website link and watched a few seconds of the videos there. To me she sounds like a cross between Dolly Parton and Stevie Nicks, and perhaps favoring Nicks.

I couldn't decide (if one must label her) if she is country or folk or just what, though. I think she could have a very strong country following (I'm no fan of today's country, but that's neither here nor there). Well in any case, she's another Canadian doing very well, it appears! Thanks for sharing the link.
