I saw this Brent pop up on Etsy last Saturday morn, just had to hit the buy button. No wembling, no waiting for questions to be answered, etc., because at 20 dollars plus 8 and change to ship, I knew it wouldn't last long. Arrived today. Had a wonky brim that an ironing on my flange cured, and a dry sweat that responded well to a liberal slathering of Lexol. Other than that, in great shape.

Brim 2 1/2", crown 4 1/2" as creased. 114g.
A fairly fine braid for a house brand.

And a head shot.

I'm going to make a guess of mid 50's. Any input welcomed as usual.

Starting to get the hang of this straw braid hat making thing. This one in brown hemp with striped grosgrain ribbon. I made this hat for my 86 year old father who hit the pinnacle of his own personal style in the 1960's and pretty much just stayed with that. When I look at this hat I think of Florida retirement communities.

VERY nice! Your pop's a lucky guy (although you're probably the lucky one to have him to make a hat for...)

Makes me want a mojito or something!

Unless you get vintage, the only way to get a decent Milan straw (that I know of) is to get one from Optimo ( www.optimohats.com )

Here's mine:

1090956_IMG-vi.jpg

It's made from some sort of wheat straw. When I open the box, it smells like freshly cut hay.

All of the "milan" hats that I've seen from other vendors are made from plastic or paper, and are shellacked till they are stiff. My Milan from Optimo is soft and pliable.
I just purchased a vintage Resistol made in Milan, Italy. It's straw and says "Resistol self conforming. The hat is very soft, leather sweatband. Can you provide any information?

Here's one...

I've got four Milan straws, two Resistols and Dobbs and a Stetson (with another on the way). I really enjoy them. Here's my gold Resistol:

Right now prices still seem pretty good on most straws I've been watching. You can find some fine lids, with shipping, for around 20 bucks.
I cannot open your pics, but are any of your resistols from Italy?

I have a Resistol Milan; however, I'll have to dig it out to see if it says Italy.

My guess is the Milan body was of Italian origin, but the hat was built in Garland, TX. Italy sounds sexier, though.

Please post pics. It would help tremendously.

Says "Made in Italy"

Still, color me skeptical. I think it's an Italian Milan body finished at the Resistol plant in Texas.

Of course I could be wrong, but I don't think Byer-Rolnick had any manufacturing facilities in Europe.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure somebody will correct me.

Is there a reorder tag behind the sweatband?

There is a tag behind the band that says made in Italy. You can see it in one of the photos.

Yes. Is the reorder number, size, etc. also on the tag, or is there another affixed to the hat behind the sweatband? Quite often, that might have some information, as well.

It has a lot number, size, ORD number and style and is marked "made in Italy". No other tags other than the stamp on the sweatband. I dont like pulling the band down because the seam is starting to tear..
