Meerschuam pipe, Abe Lincoln

I have a Meerschaum posted in the " show us your pipes " thread, posted last night. I am looking to get some information from any Loungers who know about these pipes and possible value. I'd like to know more before I possibly offer it up for sale. Thanks for taking a look.

I figured someone else would have answered this by now, but it doesn't seem like anyone has. I'm no pipe expert (I've only sold a few), but I do know a few things about them as a fellow pipe smoker.

If you want a lesson on Meerschaum pipes I could give you a quick lesson, but I think your more interested in your particular pipe. If I had to guess your pipe will probably go for $20-$80 bucks on Ebay, don't quote me on it though it's just a guess ;).

Your pipe is modern. If its Turkish Meerschaum it was made in Turkey, Turkey hasn't exported blocked Meerschaum since the 70's. Being that your pipe is of Lincoln your best buyers will be, Republicans, Lincoln fans, History lovers, Civil War enthusiast, and novelty collectors (which lot of pipe collectors are anyways lol). Your pipe could go for more then what I estimated if two such collectors started fighting each other.... but I doubt that will happen.

You can get a brand new Lincoln Meerschaum for $130. You may even be able to get it for cheaper then that at some places if your willing to search hard enough.

So keep that in mind, but as Pubililus Syrus said
Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it.
In other words I could guess all day, but in the end we won't find out what it's worth "today" unless you put it on the bay and give it a go :p.

What I don't know about your pipe though is if it's block Meerschaum, or pressed Meerschaum. Presed Meerschaum is quite frankly in my opinon worthless, unless your simply going to use it as a display piece. Any Meerschaum pipe that isn't from blocked Meerschaum simply isn't going to sell for much.

If your still concerned the best advice I can give you is to simply watch the bay for pipes that are similar to yours, and see what they go for.

I think it's safe to say that Mr. Lincoln and his legacy are no more cherished and admired by Republicans than by Democrats, independents, and Americans of virtually every political stripe (save those of that relatively small faction who still think ill of him because of the Civil War).

His appeal is wide-ranging and distinctly nonpartisan.

I'm not making a political statement, I'm talking about collectors, the people who would tend to spend money on such a pipe..... The Lounge is suppose to be a no politics zone.

Many Republican operatives collect Lincoln memorabilia because he was the first Republican President of the US, and is the name sake of many Republican Party fundraisers commonly called Lincoln Days (or often Lincoln/Reagan Days today). On such advents its not uncommon to see a few odd things with Lincolns image on it being displayed in an attempt to create an atmosphere that will help donor part with their cash.

A nonsmoker who would buy the pipe listed would most likely be from this camp or one of the others that I listed. Collectors who buy GOP memorabilia are by in large Republicans themselves.

Democrats on the other hand tend to collect Jackson memorabilia (Jackson being the first "modern" Democrat President). Others collect Jefferson memorabilia. Not surprisingly most Democrat fundraisers are known as Jefferson/Jackson Days.

In my experience people who buy political memorabilia tend to do it with an ideological eye, unless it is based solely on certain item (such as someone who simply collects political buttons, political pamphlets, or political fliers).

For a nonsmoker to buy this pipe it would require them to spend disposable income on something that will essentially be a display piece, something that is unlikely to happen in this economy unless a person is a niche collector. In other words his best buyers will be, Republicans, Lincoln fans (I guess I should've called them "Non Republicans who still love Abe Lincoln" ), History lovers, Civil War enthusiast, and novelty collectors.

I'm not saying that only Republicans like Mr. Lincoln, or admire him . I am saying that he has a better chance of selling his pipe to someone who collects Republican memorabilia compared to other types of collectors. I wasn't making a political statement, I was just trying to help the guy market what he has.
