Massimo Dutti: Opinions?

I quite like this Massimo Dutti leather jacket and was wondering what your thoughts are on the quality and fit of this brand? It's $375 and is well within my price range for a leather coat. Unfortunately, i'm not in the market to spend $800 on a leather jacket. The Massimo Dutti has all the bells and whistles that i'm looking for. What do you think?

I may be too spoiled but I didn't think much of what I saw. I've tried a couple of their jackets just the other day, they had some cafe racer types and bombers... Looks okay and fits well but the leather's super thin (lambskin I think it is) and possibly embossed/corrected. Fashion-y sort of stuff, I suppose, but I wouldn't trust it in a drizzle.

I don't like it myself. It won't be stylish in any way at all in 12 months (if it is even stylish now). But I'm a snob, so don't mind me.
Aside from that, the model in the photo isn't wearing a belt with his jeans, which for me is a fashion FAIL. So that's an association I would want to steer clear of. And, I've just noticed that his tie is tucked into his jeans (jeans and a neck-tie, WTF? I mean, choose if your wearing casual or not FFS).

It's obviously not going to be an Aero/GW/ELC/NorShor/etc but I'd imagine if the build quality is OK then you'll probably get quite a few years use and enjoyment out of it.

Buy what YOU like and just enjoy it.

the thing is, i'm fairly ignorant when it comes to leather jackets/brands. on top of that, I simply don't have $800-1000 to drop on a leather coat. I like the Massimo Dutti because of the color and style. I'm looking for a coat like this one that isn't going to set me back. I'm open to other brands that have similar styles and price points.

You might check out Johnson Leathers. I know this has become an auto-response but you might be able to find something not too much higher than your price. Email him that picture and ask for a quote.

Save up a few more bucks and buy a used jacket. Would you rather spend $375 on a jacket that lasts a few years, tops, or pony up $500-600 for a used one that lasts more than one lifetime? The $375 purchase is a false economy.

That jacket is a modern fashion jacket. Most of the people who knock around here (me included) are mostly into classic vintage leather designs from the 1920s to 1950s. But that's not to specifically bag this jacket, it's just that it doesn't fit into the main interest of most members here.

Saying that, if you like it and it'll fit well with the clothes you wear then I would say go for it. Any leather jacket should fit with what you usually wear and if it will then buy it. Just make sure that it's well constructed and put together, because if it is, you'll no doubt get a lot of wear and enjoyment out of it.

From my past experience of their stuff, they may look OK on display but their materials fall way short of expectations and price tags.
So I never buy them unless on sale (at least 50% off).

IMHO, you are much better off waiting a bit, saving a few more dollars, and buying a quality jacket. This way, you can buy a superior jacket that you will enjoy MUCH more. The deferred enjoyment will be well worth it when you sling the superior jacket over your shoulders for many years.

Is lamb skin considered garbage by leather standards? If I could find a similar looking coat but better quality I might change my mind. I guess I want a leather coat mainly for casual wear. I don't ride a motorcycle so a moto jacket would look silly on me. Likewise, I'm not into the vintage bomber look

Yeah, I agree with some of the other posters, save up a little more money, and buy a used repro of a classic made by Aero or something, and it'll be a jacket that you can wear every year- a timeless classic that will get more character with age.

Take a look at the Vanson offerings. They have plenty of jackets suitable for casual wear, with a pretty good price.

Lambskin isn't garbage by itself but this particular brand works with what people refer to as mall quality leather which won't last you nearly as long as other hides. It's thin, rips easily and it gets soaked in the rain. Heck, you're better off even with the cheapest cowhide. Of course, none of that matters if you're only looking for a casual jacket you intend on wearing from time to time, for a year or two, but if you want a jacket that you plan on making a part of your every day wardrobe, then go with what other posters have said; save up a little more cash and buy a quality leather jacket. You won't regret it. For the kind of money Massimo Dutti wants, you can find some really great jackets on eBay.

Even if you don't ride, take a look at motorcycle jackets manufacturers because they make quality and durability a priority due to safety standards and besides, most serious MC jacket manufacturers always have several casual looking jackets on offer, exactly for that purpose. Thanks, that's helpful. So basically I should take the same approach with leather jackets that I do with dress shoes or boots - quality is king. I'll check out aero and vanson
