My latest Gannon is another using 100% nutria fur felt sourced from Sunrise. The color is cobalt blue, my second in this color. The hat was inspired by a beautiful Dobbs I was caretaker of for a couple weeks before it found a new home. The felt was shipped to me and I forwarded it Gannon. The felt is the 160g dress weight, but it’s stiffer and slightly smaller than the previous 160g hat bodies I’ve received. The finished hat has a very thin and supple crown that forms up as it gets closer to the brim break. The brim is thicker and firmer still. A great hat that has the soft moldable crown of a vintage hat but an ear wester firm brim.

We went with a wide 1 3/16” tone-on-tone binding and 2 ¼” wide periwinkle ribbon with a frayed bow. The open crown is 6 ¼” and the brim is three inches. The liner is bronze.

I’ve shown it in indirect and direct natural lighting. The blue isn’t nearly as bright as the indirect light makes it appear in photos.

I really love my Gannon but I dont feel like I have got the bash to ever look right. The felt is super dense and even with a lot of steam I have found it difficult to shape. I'm not sure if I somehow ended up with a western felt, but I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations.

Lol, nice try! Like I said I really like it, and have not had issues shaping other hats this one has just been a little more difficult to get it to look right.

I understand. It’s a great looking hat.
I have a few early Gannons and on one the felt always seemed to have a mind if it’s own. Ultimately, I ended bashing it the way it wanted to go rather than fight it.

Get a spray bottle and fill it with water. Mist your hat damp, but not soaking through, (depending on how thick the felt is you may have to get it just a little wetter than damp). Crease it while it's damp and set it aside to dry. I do all of my hats that way, (especially my thick felted Western conversions when steam won't touch them). You've seen my conversions. I get sharp defined creases. Also: if you're not sure of the quality of water where you live, use bottled water to mist it.

There could be a couple things at work here. Gannon mostly uses Winchester felt and it is far from consistent. Sometimes it is thicker and/or has more stiffener in it. The variability is quite large. The other possibility is many prefer their felt to be…robust. I always like my crowns to be thin and easily molded. I’m sure other of his customers would not like this kind of felt at all. If you didn’t specify how you like the felt then I’m not sure what his default is.

The first three Gannons I received a few years ago are a lot different from my more recent hats. Part of this is due to Michael’s abilities changing, and part is due to the two of us understanding what I want in my hats.

Michael is a great hatter to work with. He has offered to rework my hats on a couple of occasions. Reach out to him and see if he has any recommendations.

Congrats Brent. I like the cobalt blue. The felt appears to have a smooth nap on the brim. I really think it looks sharp. The crown, from the pics, looks to be an easy crease, re-crease. I think you and Mr.Gannon have zero'd in on flattering proportions. I was reading thorugh the last couple pages of posts on this thread and echo your words that proportions matter. Small me and bigger you require different proportions. Anywho, I like the hat. Very creative attributes and ribbon work.

I will celebrate a New Hat Day sometime this week. I would like to share with you the pics from Mr.Gannon of my inbound new hat.

This hat took inspiration from my Stetson Playboy in silverbelly (Winchester beaver felt) that I am wearing to its early demise. This hat is my hopes of a grand beaver felt Gannon that can be worn as a salute to the Playboy.

Lightweight felt, easily creased crown, side vents (diamond) , removable liner, white ribbon in sweat, windcord and treated leather sweat are some of the hats features.

I have very high expectations of this new Gannon hat.
