...Felt colors are hard for me to accurately capture. I’ve included indoor artificial lighting, outdoor direct sun light, and outdoor indirect sunlight...
If nothing else, the one thing you've captured very well is the way the different lighting conditions affect how we perceive the different colors. "Wait, he said that hat is grey, but now it looks brown, and in that photo it looks green, and the ribbon..." Nice work Brent, and really nice hats!

I received my Gannon felt samples from Michael today. I am so glad that I asked for them. I was able to compare each sample to the Akubra’s and Stetson’s I currently own. I have narrowed my choices, Steel and Camel. Granite and Sahara are great colors, but there is just a slight difference compared to what I currently have in rotation. Granite is almost identical to my Akubra Sydney in Regency Fawn and only slightly different than my Acorn Fawn Stylemaster.
Steel is a grey color in between Akubra’s Carbon Grey (dark) and Akubra’s Moonstone (light). It seems like a color that would fit perfectly in my fedora rotation.
Camel is another great color. It is a warm tan with a yellow hue. It is much different than any other color I currently own. I like it a lot and I can see it making into my rotation more than my Silverbelly Stratoliner.
I own eight fur felt hats with five of them being in the tan/brown color spectrum. So I am currently leaning heavily towards commissioning my Gannon in Steel.
I would like to thank all of my fellow Loungers for providing me with your thoughts and insight.
Be safe and enjoy your week.

Glad you are able to narrow your choices Steve. Exciting to have a hat build coming up - New Hat Day is near.

Below is a pic showing Blue, granite and steel gray (L-R).

Eric your Gannon family tree picture helped me tremendously. I studied the colors carefully. Your hats are amazing and your photography captures each hat in spectacular fashion. I’ve sent my reply email to Michael with my color choice. Now I have to decide on the ribbon and binding color. I want either an exact match or just a slight contrast in the ribbon compared to the felt.

Being here in PDX, I am excite to finally have discovered Michaels' business. The hat on the left that looks to be white--is it indeed, white, and is the crown open?

Thanks you! What a tree!

I’ll let Eric tell you about his hats...and maybe he’ll give us an updated Gannon Tree photo with the newer arrivals!

Michael Gannon moved to California almost a year ago due to family matters. I don’t think he plans on staying in California, but he’s not in Oregon at this time. You won’t regret getting one of his hats regardless of what state he’s in when he makes it!

Good morning sir. Here is another pic of the lighter hued hats. L-R are silverbelly, bone and silvermist. The silvermist is a cool white hued felt.

I think there is a terminology issue here. Once a hat has a crease/bash it is no longer open crown even if it came as an open crown hat. Any creased hat is, by definition, not open crown. The same works in reverse: a hat, even if factory creased, can have the crease pushed out and be made open crown. Factory pressed in creases are tough to completely remove, but it can be done.

All of my Gannons arrived open crown and I did the shaping; one of my favorite things about receiving a new hat.

Thanks for clarifying, but we are actually on the same page. I prefer hats without the factory creasing, although of course I've bought them that way. I like shaping the hat myself too. Nice to know the Gannons can arrive open and we can have that fun.

Michael is very skilled and can make just about anything you want. I recommend him highly.

My last hat was made with FEPSA felt, and came open crown. Being stuck at home so much I have yet to wear it out of the house, only trying it on the day I received it. Dad gum covid.

I really like this hat sir. Classy is my impression. Refresh my memory, what felt is it?

I like it! I've been awaiting your review of these latest Nutria felts. Didn't realize they were operating out of Berkeley, maybe I can save myself some shipping charges. I wonder if they are they same as Hampui hats.

They are the same as Hampui Hats. Here is part of a message they sent on the stiffness of their 220g western felts:

“Hi Brent,

It's quite curious.... We use these for our hats as well (Hampui Hats) and haven't noticed any difference except for with the Natural....”

Their finished hat prices are not cheap. As I’m not making my own hats as you are, I think I’m sticking with Gannon.

I think FEPSA calls it Gunsmoke

That gunsmoke color I do like.

This said I still cross my fingers with the remote hope to see a beaver felt hue like the dove that was designed and offered by Art Fawcett (former owner of Vintage Silhouettes, VS). I have three hats in dove, a couple Stratoliner and a Wanderer inspired hats created by Mr.Fawcett. My fav felt hue of all time. The light gray is a cool color. Gray is a color distinctly different than silverbelly.

Below are pics of the Winchester VS dove hats with a Gannon Steel Gray. The bright sun does give a hint of brown or tan hue to the dove today. It does not have this hue in person.

The Gannon steel gray felt hues are hard to capture in pic today in the bright sun and reflections off the snow. Below is abetter pic of the steel gray.
