Hi all, I'd be grateful for color advice for a commission from Gannon. I'd like a hat that will compliment my tweed-heavy fall and spring suits and jackets. My tweeds tend toward the brown and green spectrum, as one would imagine, and I wear other odd jackets in similar colors, with a covert coat or beige rain coat and a range of brown, or occasionally burgundy, shoes. I don't wear so much in the black/gray/blue spectrums. A hat newby here, I'd been mostly wearing flat caps until I picked up my first fedora a couple months ago, a dark brown, short-brimmed beaver from Henri-Henri in Montreal.

So, I'm looking for a lighter color to alternate with my dark brown, but one that will compliment my tweedy wardrobe. I like what I've seen in sahara with antique copper--lighter than I'd been considering, but it might be quite fetching. I've also been considering camel or whiskey. The Gannon whiskeys I've seen on this thread seem to very, some are more dark brown, while others evoke subtle greenish tones (the latter might be nice for tweed suits, which tend toward the green). I'd be grateful for any expert advice you might have (take it easy on the noob, this my first post!). Many thanks!
I agree with Tukwila. Both the Whisky and Pecan are great colours that are mid toned and relatively neutral.

In the lighter colours I am big fan of Natural. It is light but still has some depth of colour. Granite is a darker colour but still neutral....but how neutral depends on the dye lot. I have two, one has decided brown tones to it while the other is more grey.....but still neutral and fills the middle of the road spectrum for both brown tweeds and could also be worn with grey items and not look out of place. And by the way you cannot go wrong with a Gannon.

If you want a darker tone then I’d vote for whiskey. If you want a lighter colored hat I’d go with natural followed by Sahara. I like my pecan, but I don’t find it as versatile as some of the other colors.

I’ve also had great luck trusting the hatter to chose specifics after describing what I’m after. Gannon won’t let you down, he’s one of the best.

The Natural felt is a good medium between brown and gray. This is a Phoenix but you can't go wrong with a Gannon. I have a couple myself!

Many thanks Tukwila, belfastboy, deadlyhandsome and Rmccamey for your replies and advice! I've basically spent my Saturday going through all of the photos on this thread, as well as Michael's gallery (many of the same hats, to be sure). I'm definitely sold on his work. I originally was looking for a brown homburg and asked if he does that style. He politely demured, saying that it wasn't a style he felt capable of doing--a modesty that I greatly respect in an artist and craftsman.

I hadn't considered granite. It's a very interesting choice, though, as belfastboy says (and the photos show), it depends on greatly on the batch of felt at hand. Natural is another I hadn't looked closely at before, and a very nice medium between sahara and pecan or granite, yet not as bold as camel. I think I'm leaning that direction, especially since upon inspecting my brown hat again, it's closer to pecan or medium brown than dark brown. So, something lighter, but maybe not as light at sahara--natural fits that nicely. But, as you know, it all depends on the batches, and what felts Michael has available for my size (61.5).

Thank you again for the advice, and for posting so many pictures of you hats on this thread! I look forward to working with Michael to choose a hat soon, and hopefully receive it in a couple months. I'll post the order specs to the thread once we've got them set.

Another way to think about using a hat to coordinate with attire is whether the hat felt is a warm or cool color. Warm felt color will compliment warm colors in an outfit. I also find a silverbelly with charcoal (to make neutral or allow pairing with gray/back) to be very versatile with attire. Some wrongs that are obvious, but lots of options that work. The hardest, IMO, is trying to match the hat to an article of clothing. This is nearly impossible and like pairing clothing with tie a complimentary hue is better.

Moss green is a cool color. The whiskey is a warm color even in different lighting situations.

Crazy but you may want to hunt up a pic of you in your attire and start putting some of the many hats shown on this thread on top of your picture to see what you like.

I’m the same size as you. Does Michael have a block that will work for you? He told me his old #52 block gave up the ghost and he has another on order.

That's good advice, thanks. My wardrobe definitely tents toward the warm end of the spectrum, rich brown and mossy tweeds and flannels. I have in fact been holding my computer up to some of my jackets to see how the colors combine, not crazy at all imho! Matching is indeed tricky. I do have some matching tweed caps in the exact material of my suits (a bit much, I know!), but in general I agree that it's better to compliment than match. I love the moss felt, but it may be too close to a couple of my tweeds for comfort.

Oh my, thanks for letting me know. Hopefully he'll have something that can work! I'll let you know what he says

Michael said he hopes to have a new block in eight weeks. Should be about the time my hats come up in his queue so no impact. Of course, these days nothing is for sure and who knows what delays might await us. Still, wether it’s in two months or four we’ll still have our hats. It eases the pain that we’re leaving felt weather anyway.

Good point. I'm not expecting to wear it until after summer anyway.

A suggestion: Once you have narrowed down your choice(s) ask Michael to send you a swatch of the felt)s) under consideration. NEVER, ever trust the colours you see in your monitor except as relative comparisons. Also note that the colour of the hat you receive will be lighter than the unpounced swatch.

Thanks, belfastboy. Very helpful to know about the darker color in the unpounded swatch, I hadn't heard of that. I'll be sure to ask for swatches and keep that in mind. True, the color can be appear radically different when digitized.

One aspect that makes felts fascinating to me is how the light plays with the colour. Even with a good camera and a good monitor it all depends on the lighting. The same hat side by side by side in 3 different lighting will can look like 3 different coloured hats. I have learned, sadly through mistaken purchases, never to trust a picture on my monitor. Have fun with the selection.

Gannon in “steel” beaver with “blue metal” ribbon. Still working on the crease. This is the most finely pounced hat Michael has made for me.

Would you say this has the "right" mixture of blue-grey for your liking, Brent? I'm trying to decide what ribbon to use on my blue smoke felt from Art that I sent to Michael.

This Gannon is buried in a stack somewhere, and I’m still looking for it. As I recall, it is a nice tone of dark blue. I’ll find it and post it next to a blue smoke so you can get a better idea.
