The original lot of nutria felts were 180 grams, but the new lot are larger, stiffer, and 220 grams. For a dress hat, the 180 gram felts sound more to my liking.

I contemplated buying one and attempting to make a hat for myself but these felts are expensive and once I add the cost of the sweat, ribbon etc I am over the $200 and damn close to the cost of a custom Winchester beaver from Michael....so I have talked myself out of it.

Michael replied that the new 220gr Nutria hats were much more suitable for a Western styled hat (but not as stiff as the Winchester Western weight) and if it is a Fedora styling then the Winchester Beaver is still the best choice.

Posted my navy Gannon a couple of years ago when I received it. Super tall crown, it really gets some looks. I am also interested in the improvements in quality of his current work. This one is so great, I can only imagine how the newer customs turn out.

Your blue fedora is so very stately. The ribbon and block make that a hat that demands attention. It really works for you. I was surprised over the past couple years as to how much I like wearing blue hats.

My blue Gannon has a mid-ribbon and is certainly a country hat that can go downtown. Not a downtown hat like yours. The small details make a big difference.

Agreed. I have been curious to order a lighter nutria to see how a 180 gram nutria hat compares. Lightweight hats I have worn more this year than dress.

I can not wait to see what new hats folks have ordered.

Sounds like a lot of interest in whiskey. Michael has made quite a few in this felt hue. I held off thinking that they were too stereotypical Raider's hats. How wrong I was. The whiskey felt makes a great hat. I love wearing mine.

Whiskey mania.
Yes, I have one of Michaels, Whisky with the rust ribbon..(Idea, with permission!, borrowed from Moon). It has Michael's signature styling. It is a great hat in a great colour

Crazy question this Sunday: I do not own a rabbit felt. How does Michael's stock of hare/beaver compare in a fedora weight? The features I enjoy in these modern hats is the relative durability and hard use they can go thru with nary a mark. Same between hare/beaver in his felt capes?

Realizing I am a NO hare man this morning. Best, Short Balding Guy, Eric -

Twice I’ve intended to order rabbit fur felt hats from Gannon, and both times Michael talked me into beaver. I got the feeling that he doesn’t like rabbit much. He told me he doesn’t keep many rabbit felts in stock as he makes relatively few of them.

Thanks. My experience also.
I have not spoke to any custom hatter and asked their opinion of working with rabbit versus beaver. I do onw a couple of Winchester rabbit hats. Looks like wise they do look good and side by side stand up to the beaver. However without giving the rabbit hats even a moderate workout in the elements they don't seem to be stand up to the wear and tear. I think I would have been much better served to have spent the extra on the beaver......seems to me to be false economy.

My new Gannon is complete and Michael did an amazing job.

It is Whiskey with a vintage Slate ribbon. This is one of the oldest ribbons Michael has. The color was my choice, but everything else I let Michael create on his own. I love it and can't wait.

That slate ribbon is unique; I bet it will be great against whiskey felt. Enjoy your hat!

Wow! That is really special looking. The ribbon and matching bound edge make the eye track to the ribbon. Excellent choices. If you might, what is the open crown height and brim dimension?

I am partial to the "slate" or charcoal ribbon work. To my thinking it allows the hat to be paired with a wider variety of colored attire. Whiskey in bright light can appear much browner and the charcoal helps to my way of thinking.

Glorious. Congrats. Can not wait to see pics when it arrives. New hat day comes soon.

Best, Eric -
