LW Bedford or Pea Coat?

Hey guys,

First time posting, having been directed here by a very friendly member of another forum - I've lurked since the moment I found the outerwear section, searching for information on Lost Worlds as a company. I've discovered a bit of a mixed bag of responses, typically concluding that although the owner is a bit eccentric about some aspects of business/life, he makes a damn fine product, as I've yet to read a single bad thing about his jackets.

Regardless, I'm posting in lieu of reading because in all of my searching of your fine forum, I've yet to find anyone who owns a Lost Worlds Bedford or Pea Coat jacket. I'm looking for photos of either beyond what LW offers on their website - preferably being worn by a person. Does anyone know anyone that can help me out, or has anyone come across anything in their travels to other forums?

I'd appreciate the help. I am a man with expensive tastes in other areas (firearms, knives, gear, gadgetry and electronics), but my clothing is little more than functional. LW seems to be very much along those lines, but just as fashionable as functional. I've never dropped more than $400 on a jacket, but large purchases aren't alien to me.

In my travels, I also came across Engineer boots, but in all of my looking about Kingston, Ontario, I have yet to find anything other than overpriced Harley gear. I've never worn an Engineer-style boot before, so before I even consider a set of Red Wings or Vibergs (although I have spent my fair share of time on Wesco's website), I'd need to try something on. Any suggestions, Ontario members?

Thank you in advance for your help. :)

Welcome to the Lounge.

I started this thread on the same subject (plus LW's Downtown). Unfortunately, however, no one posted any pics of the Bedford or Peacoat. There is at least one member here who owns a peacoat - perhaps he will now be inspired to post.

I was seriously considering these coats but decided not to mostly because of cost. I wanted to make some modifications, which I think would have pushed the peacoats price up over $1300 - getting into ridiculously expensive territory for my station in life. I think they are probably worth it, if you are willing and able to pay for them.

One complaint I have seen: some people think that LW's heavy horsehide is too heavy and too thick. I was considering their midweight horse, which, from what I remember, was still substantive. Others have mentioned that the leather doesn't develop the same patina as an Aero - it depends on what you are looking for.

Thank you for the reply, Philalethes - I was afraid this topic was going to slip off of the first page and into obscurity.

I have also heard complaints about the weight (both of the jacket itself and of the hide), and while I would certainly agree with the statement that heavier doesn't always mean better, I have a few lighter weight jackets already, and would love something that's as overbuilt as many of the other things that I enjoy. And if a jacket tires you out by the end of the day, you should probably hit the gym. Most of us likely carry heavier things daily with less effective weight distribution anyways.

Thanks for your input!

Hi Brad,

I largely agree with you about the weight of a coat, but there are probably some practical limits: I remember reading here about someone who claimed to be strong and yet suffered a stiff neck and shoulders from driving in a very heavy coat - I think it was a shearling-lined Barnstormer. In any case, a LW probably won't be that heavy. One of the reasons I was considering mid-weight HH was to compensate for a heavy liner. Otherwise, as far as weight goes, I don't think it would be a problem.

I should have added that the heaviness and thickness of the hides concerned not only weight but stiffness: one Lounge member said that his LW was too stiff to wear. But there are also several people here more than happy with their purchases, so you should talk to them.

Are you leaning towards one or the other? I really like the peacoat:very simple and yet it stands out. The stitching on the collar is amazing.

I've got two Lost Worlds jackets and yes the horsehide is stiff right out of the box but it does loosen up over time especially when the finish starts degrading to the point where water can penetrate the leather.

Their quality is first rate also.

I received my LW Suburban yesterday and left the Fox Creek in the closet and wore the LW. I dont get what folks struggle with. It feels like body Armor but in a great way. I had no issues riding and felt very comfortable.

I don't own either but I love the Pea Coat, will probably be my next LW. Looks fantastic and more unique than any other long coat.

Hi Brad,

Did you ever buy the coat? I've been plotting to buy the LW pea coat for the past month, but I sure would like an owner's opinion of it beforehand. If you did buy from LW, did you have a good experience? If you got the pea coat, what's your impression of it? How warm is it (i.e., in what temperature range do you feel comfortable wearing it)? Do you have any recommendations for ordering, such as measurement allotments? Lastly, could you post any pictures? I'd love to see what this coat looks like on someone rather than just a plastic torso before dropping $1100 on it. Many thanks,

Cheech

I love my LW suburban jacket and downtown carcoat...the leather is not stiff and dull compare to my bulky Aero halfbelt..
My second coat will be LW Bedford, in olive green..(waiting for Santa Claus)
