Badalassi is in a different category by type.

But as far as a horsehide for workwear jackets? Nothing tops it for feel, grain development, etc. Maybe Lost Worlds, which I don't own.

Guys, the high price was a mistake. It's actually $859. I just ordered one.
Ah my bad, badalassi is cow

I didn't just mean the fact that it's cow. It has a really beautiful depth of colour–but on the flip side it's not really a water resistant heavy duty leather in the way something chrome tanned is.

They changed the price from this morning when I screenshot and added three sizes above size 50, up to size 56. Congratulations

Yup, $730 with the new customer 15% discount

I have the Schott 628US D pocket which I love, & generally not a fan of in house Schott horsehide, but the rave reviews about the jacket in this thread make the price look like a deal!

That's the Chromexcel repro of the Beck 333 right?

I can't speak to earlier batches but the horsehide Schott has been using the past few years is incredible.

Yeah, but Schott's horsehide is probably my fave anyone is making right now.

@ton312 what's your take on this? We tend to see jackets pretty similarly.
If the HH is like the stuff on this jacket, which I only owned for 24hrs:

I wouldn’t balk at the price at all. IMO it’s far nicer than CXL and the HH LW is using (which I found it quite similar to). I would say unequivocally that this^ was/is the nicest Horsehide I’ve handled. You can put them all in a bag; CXL, Dreadnought LW, Shinki, Vic, whatever else, and throw it away b/c it can’t compare. It IS that good. Thick, grainy, perfect amount of high/low gloss. Flawless. I really, really liked it.

Far as the pattern goes, I can’t comment as I’ve never owned nor tried one on. I will say it does seem a bit dramatic in terms of the taper compared to the original Buco.

Yeah I tagged you in that because we've both experienced the current Schott horsehide. Once the price dropped by $500 I just went ahead and ordered.

Went for the 42" because my ideal hem is 20"; I have a 19" hem on a jacket and it's just a bit too snug for the belt to be useful.

That’s right. Its a find in that size. Can’t thank @jonbuilder enough for this one!

@ton312 Looks like we are talking about two completely different batches of leather. I recently handled an almost new horsehide jacket-P620H, which I sold on the lounge rather quickly. Couldn’t come around to liking the horsehide - it was plasticky & squeaky. Didn’t hold to candle to CXL FQHH in my opinion

I think the version used on that jacket is thinner but otherwise comparable. I do like that jacket though.

The thing about this leather is that you need to wear it. It goes from looking plain when new to having unrivalled break-in and grain development. The current Schott horsehide, broken in, looks like a real (yet pristine) vintage jacket in how the leather develops, no gimmicks like a thin topcoat. It doesn’t take long, either. A few wears in rain (or after dousing in the shower, to admit what I did) and you’re nearly there. Much harder to do with a Type II than a cross-zip, though, of course.

Well I certainly did not expose it to any elements

I try to avoid water exposure to my jackets, although that doesn’t work all the time. I understand this doesn’t really sync with how leather jackets are supposed to be used, and most forum members love to give their leather a water bath. I prefer the waxy look on the leather, & have realised the wax usually wears off after prolonged water exposure

It's not going to wear off on this. You'll still have the shine, just a lot more character to the leather panels.

In fact the reason a lot of forum members dislike Schott's hides is the shiny/waxy look (that you and I love!)

730 is a good value.

I have just the one Schott Trojan in their horsehide. Don’t expect same level as brand name tannery horsehides.. The Schott horsehide pigment topcoat has an acrylic like high sheen, probably contributes to the plastic feel. Good for those looking for a black jacket that stays shiny black overtime. For 730 I’d think it’s a very good deal. This Schott version also seem to have the underarm footballs so that‘s a plus.

Again, this is the wrong way of looking at it, unless you think an unworn day one jacket is how it will look forever. It breaks in beautifully.

It's nicer than the 'brand name tannery horsehides' imo.
