Leather Jacket in Airplane (long flight)

Hi All,

Do you use your leather jacket in the plane?or at least kept it at upper compartment?

New jacket have distinct smell and I worry it will cause inconvenience for other passengers. Some may like it, some will not.

I am talking about on 8-12 hours flight. Keeping my jacket with other clothes will also spread the smell to my other clothes

Perhaps a clothes freshener sachet in a garment cover for the jacket would work though it might affect the leather adversely.I have not flown since 1994 so what do I know!

I bunch it up and use it as a pillow. No-one has ever complained about leather smells. I wouldn't do anything different if they did. If I really didn't like leather smells from new, clean leather, I'd not buy things made out of it.

I am more concern with people who don’t like the smell. For me, I don’t have problem with the smell.

A long flight is the perfect time to break-in a jacket. Wear it and sleep in it. No one will care.

Most smells in planes are taken care of by the on-board air-cycling. This is why passenger planes don't absolutely stink after a few hours. I doubt that the person next to you would be overpowered by a slight smell of leather from a jacket- you could just put it down by your feet and no-one would be able to detect it.

I am more concern with people who don’t like the smell. For me, I don’t have problem with the smell.
If they don’t like it they can always get off

i wore almost all my leather jackets to planes, some of them for 11+ hour long flights and had no issues. Buco, GW, Rainbow Country, recently a new lost worlds for 7 hours flight. I just throw them at hand luggage space and that's all.

This may sound egoistic, but I think more likely than not the other passengers will like the smell.

Now, like handymike said, effectively the smell will diminish with the air system.

Last but not least, wear it, don’t put in compartment.

Psychologically, leather smell may actually promote the sense of 'luxury'. Most people associate the scent of (new) leather with high-end products, such as leather bags, leather jackets, leather shoes as well as leather seats in new cars.

Honestly, I would rather have new leather smell than someone who wears a mixture of choking perfumes from the dutyfree shop samples. What I worry about placing my 1grand leather jacket in the overhead storage is it being scratched and damaged by those over-weight hardshell hand-carry suitcases.

That flight was the longest 5 hours of my life. I had a sciatic problem at the time also which didn't help my comfort situation.

You guys just don't know. I got stuck sitting next to a dude in a leather jacket on a 9 hrs train ride. The jacket smelled of leather (more than any other jacket I came across), booze and cigarettes. But the smell... The stench was so strong that I literally felt sick after an hour. It was just the jacket, nothing else, dude didn't smell bad nor was he dirty or anything, but the smell that disgusting jacket was emanating was so powerful that I spent most of the trip in the corridor.

Oh, and I practically have no sense of smell.

As for traveling in a leather jacket, I wore a Vanson on a 9 hrs plane flight to Canada and back. Didn't feel uncomfortable at all. Quite a pleasant flight it was.

I flew from California to Virginia to visit the sister. On the way back I wore a San Diego Leathers CHP jacket I copped there. Big mistake. Sweaty palms, sweaty neck. The whole time I was having a minor panic attack. At least I learned what triggers them!

If you're a sweater, be careful wearing a leather jacket on a trip. Gets ugly really fast.

Oh yeah, I was worried about that but the temperature inside a plane was very pleasant. I slept the whole way back from Canada. It was actually very enjoyable.

I'll be flying again in 10 days and I too am not sure whether to take a denim jacket or leather...
