My Freedamn Book

Just ribbin' ya man!
Believe me, I bought that "My Freedamn" book about 50's rock n roll wear. I felt like I owned a collection of trashbags after looking through there.
Then again, it is a conglomerate of 5 or 6 collections, so it's not a totally even match.
Funny you mention that book. There are 3-4 shirts I used to own pictured in that book. One or 2 are now owned by Brian from Snappygabs and another owned by Werner of Retro City Fashions. I've sold and bought vintage from them for years.

Great looks, very well done.

The problem nowadays is few guys could pull those kind of things off well. Not just because of size/weight issues but because of the evolution of our society.

By size/weight issues, were you referring to the generously endowed? If so, I have to beg to differ. The boxy cut of the late 40s early 50s was made to order for fat guys like me. The Allies had won the war. It was a time to celebrate. And a way to express it was through the fashion. With no more rationing and restraints to attire, double breasted suits were once again in full swing, but with broader shoulders, wider pleats and peaked lapels. The majority of my wardrobe is late 40s early 50s because of my size. I totally dig 1930s attire, but wouldn't be caught dead in a pleated belted back suit because of the cut.

I agree with you. The Bold Look was a good thing for 'bigger' guys. The '30s and early-'40s were for the slim and trim; the late-'40s and early-'50s were for anyone who could wear a suit.

But what I was referring to was vintage stuff from that era is much more difficult to find in large sizes today than smaller ones. Thus, someone who's bigger than the average '40s/50's guy is going to have a hard time pulling off the look if they're looking to wear the real deal.

Cheers!

. I sold one almost identical to it in Purple and Grey for a mere $350, before I was truly enlightened regarding men's fashions. Sigh.

That jacket is actually on my list of things to reproduce, right after the "T-bone Walker" suit. I really like purples and lavenders in the context of vintage styles, I wish more purple garments would have survived!

Road trip??

When I'm rich I plan on sweeping through Europe to buy back all the amazing vintage.

Contact the author Rin Tanaka himself through the My Freedamn website. He'll sell you the books directly for way cheaper than everyone else.
