L.A.'s blowing away ...

In the valley it wasn't that windy. We have an advantage over the city areas.
I miss the rain. Wind is annoying no matter where you are.

Well, since I've lived here about 18 years, I have to concur that this is really nothing.

The winds that hit 100 mph+ (I think they measured 125 mph peak gusts)...THAT was something. They really did blow people over (several injuries at work, etc.).

Today was pretty tame.

We had 40 plus mph winds on Wed. Lost power for 12 hours. And on top of THAT - its 36 degrees with a crummy combo of rain and snow showers!

It's amazing how a dry-rotted tree can look just fine, right up until it blows over and shatters into many pieces on the ground. Fortunately in the case I saw yesterday, it fell on a lawn and didn't hit any structures or cars.

OK, wait'll you have a gusts over 80 mph that knocks out power to about 2 milllion households in your area, your power's out for about six days (and for many it was a couple of weeks) which means no heater with the temperature outside (thankfully) in the low 40's instead of the more normal 20's, gas stations can't pump gas, stores don't have power so you have to drive 45 minutes to one that does, wood supplies dwindle all over and isn't it just too funny and too ironic that the 125' hemlock that came down out back is too damp to burn even if you did have power for that brand new energy efficient electric chainsaw the other half bought?

Ahhhhhhh, memories, watercolor memories...this was Seattle, beginning at ten minutes till 11 pm on 12/14/06...now referred to by family & friends far & wide as "Mike's Big Birthday Blowout of Oh-Six."

(And I realized those in New Orleans & southern Florida have yet to weigh in about their really big winds as well...)

Not to minimize Katrina's effect on NOLA but it was mostly about infrastructure failure, not weather. It was pretty much a man-made disaster.

New York's floating away!

Well, count your blessings. Today New York, (and I imagine the entire Northeast) is washing away in the midst of a HUGE monsoon. It's cold and wet and rainy and I'M NOT GOING OUT IN IT, FOR ANY REASON!
