1900's Stetson Low Crown Fedora (The Fray Sweatband)

Here's an interesting one.....I have seen low crowned Stetsons before but this one is very low at 4 1/2 inches open crown. This hat is a very light dress weight and the edge binding is the same type and quality as the bow, so I am 99% confident that the brim has never been trimmed and re-bound. (For those thinking this may have been an Austral type hat at one time) The hat is completely original and does not appear to ever have had a liner. (Very common on early 20th century Stetsons)

Dinnerman sold a similar hat which had a 4 3/4 inch open crown, unbound 2 inch brim, and a ribbon that was not as wide, but the style is very similar to mine.

Based on all the vintage Stetson ads that I have seen, I believe this would have been considered a "pocket" hat. Its short crown, lightweight felt, and short brim could be packed in a suitcase very easily for travel. Other manufactures made similar pocket/travel hats with super short crowns and short brims in the late 1800's/early 1900's.

Nice! I almost bought that one, but I didn't want to chance screwing it up by resizing it. Glad it went to somebody who groks its awesomeness.

Wow. How about some detail shots of the innards? This place is an archive of the history of these old hats, kind of an online museum.
