To johnnyphil: you may want to see Vince Corvelli as he is the only hatter in the D.C. area that I know of (third generation). He has done a couple dozen hats for me, eveything from stingy brims and cowboy hats to toppers and, of course, fedoras. m987a

Glad to see the thin ribbon gene has been passed! :D

It has indeed! She has 2 thin ribbons. The other is a vintage Borsalino that we picked up on ebay for $20. The ladies have an advantage with hat size if they like fedoras.

If someone stretched a 7 1/2 with a bound brim to a 7 5/8 am I correct in assuming you would have to lose/replace the binding?
I'll let the pro's handle the specifics but personal experience is with non-bound westerns. I had 2 that were stretched w/o anything but steaming & putting on the stretcher at Shorty's in OKC. Edge binding could cause some funky shaping of the brim, I guess... gtd

shakeshead IC, Jimmy Pierce resized a Stevens with a bound edge for me and did not affect the brim binding at all. It was more than one size up.

New auctions on unsold fedoras?

My new friend... Here is a link to my unsold hats. http://s261.photobucket.com/albums/ii79/johnnyphi/?action=tags&current=Unsold

I have two 7 1/2 Lee Trinity hats left for auction. In fact, I have several excellent 7 1/2 hats left to be auctioned.
Hi Johnnyphi,
As I mentioned in the new members thread, I discovered The Fedora Lounge only a day after your last auction ended. Looking back over the great hats you've sold here has driven me crazy...why didn't I discover this site sooner???:eusa_doh:

But the good news is that you appear to have a few 7 3/8s left...Adam and Lee fedoras, from what I can see. Any new descriptions of these and auctions on them forthcoming?

Seeking Advice for a Prospective (and Hopeful) Johnnyphi Hat Club Member

Reviewing the unsold hats offered by Johnnyphi, I don't see too many 7 3/8s available...but there are a few 7 1/2s that I'm lusting after, at least from the photos. So here's my obvious, newbie question:

Can a 7 3/8s head (59 cm exactly) wear a 7 1/2 fedora without looking like a clown? Is it possible to use a size reducer, or will the hat just look too big?

Thanks!

Not at all. In my experience, if a hat is in good shape, you can go one size up with no problem. The sweat and the felt will give that much. I soak my hats in cold water, and then put them on my whole hat stretcher to dry. When almost dry, I remove them, shape them, and put a stick in to firm up my long oval shape (or, sometimes I just wear them around until dry).

It depends on the hat, your head and face shape, and personal taste if a larger hat will look alright. I've had the experience of both bad and good with that.

As for fit, you can slip some craft foam, cardboard, or other similar substance under the sweatband of the hat, which will improve the fit. This works very well when you're only one size off, as you are.

My Turn

We really are lucky ladies and gentlemen to have been able to purchase some hats of this quality and rarity. It is not an easy thing to find an unused hat let alone more than one in perfect condition. These are not simply unsold hats they are part of americana from a time when hats were made for the every man, rich and poor alike.

These hats were made for the long haul and will last to cover another generation.
