Jerky and Pullup?

Hello folks, a question for you leather enthusiasts out there: Is Jerky leather the same as Pull Up? Ss it from any particular animal or is it just the finishing method? Is it good or bad tho get a jacket made of either? I want the jacket to age nicely and quickly.

Jerky

Is a good thing if you want a jacket to aquire an aged or vintage look fairly rapidly. Especially if it's a horsehide A2 to which you are refering. During WW2 they just made the jackets without regard to matching the hide textures. No time for it then like there is today. I'm lucky to have found a jacket that has a little of both.

Not to step on anybody's toes...I think Paddy is the real expert in this area.
If you go to www.aeroleatherclothing.com and enter the military flight jackets section, you will find a basic description of the leathers. See Anniversary or Real Deal models for the "jerky" leather, and Natural Vintage (if I remember correctly) for the oil pull description. Jerky is a term usually given to the texture of leather...nice & grainy. However, Aero uses some specific tanning techniques to achieve the different leather qualities. As far as I know, either their Jerky or Oil Pull is made to age fairly quickly. Still, best to check with Paddy.

Looks great for sure. Only thing I don't like is that they don't say which color combination this is, nor do they show any others. [huh] I would guess this to be the seal brown lightly sprayed over russet with rust knits? I suppose one has to ask for more photos. I need to browse this site at length,......

A few of the Aero jackets have photos showing both the seal & russet variations. My biggest complaint (not against Aero specifically) is that most photos do not show the jackets' coloration accurately. A few of the Aero pics are pretty accurate, and most of those on Mark Moye's picturetrail are right on. I've always resorted to acquiring sample swatches before ordering. Aero has been great - provided leather, knit, and lining samples. Still, always too many nice choices for a jacket. I guess that's why some people end up with an entire closet full of A-2 flying jackets. [huh]

Hello-

I have a couple of 'oil-pull' jackets from Aero. My understanding is that the oil pull jackets are aniline dyed so that they 1) have a smooth feel, 2) you can see the all the good/bad of the leather, and 3) they'll soak up grease like a sponge. The oil pull part is where they treat the leather so that it lightens along the folds. They are designed to give a lived in look in a very short period of time. Of all my jackets, I have to admit that the oil-pulls get the most compliments. They start off shinny and fairly dark, but lighten/dull over time.

The 'jerky' feature is completely un-related. I guess one could have a jerky oil pull, but I've never seen pictures of one. My understanding is that the typical leather most companies use for their A-2's is essentially painted instead of stained. The good part about this is that it covers up many of the flaws in the leather, and doesn't stain very easily. The bad part is that it doesn't feel as nice.

Jerky oil pull leather...

My old jerky HH oil pull Aero A-2 had some great jerky in it. In modern jackets, jerky is the throw away bit, as folk want perfect smooth lined jackets today.
To my mind, jerky cuts have much more character and vintage look to them. They get all gnarled and grain just pops out of them like Monroe out of a birthday cake!

So jerky is a cut from the hide and so you can ask for it in any of the colours and any of the hide types, buffallo, goat, horse and in styles, eg; oiled, chrome tanned, aniline, veg dyed..etc, etc.
