As I look at different material about the war I had thought that the innovation of submarines built specifically for transportation was quite interesting. The Imperial Navy was able to supply quite a lot of the many isolated garrisons dug into tiny islands in the Pacific.

There were only 13 from I-362 to I-373. 4 actually survived the war. None of the many other 35 types of I-boats could submerge as deep as the German U-boat could they did have long ranges of some 15,0000 nautiucal miles.

Anyhow I got to tinking about them with the Yamoto thread. Check out http://www.combinedfleet.com/ for complete information on the Imperial Navy

Thank You.

This is a great subject! A good book I have is "I-Boat Captain". Any more ideas?

"I-Boat Captain" is a very pertinant book on the subject. As he mentions in that book there were some innovative ways invented to quickly and easily get cargos ashore from the subs.

The seaplane carrying subs were massive. Nothing was bigger at, 400 feet, until nuke boats of later times. There was an ongoing tentative plan to attack the Panama Canal with subs/seaplanes. It just never got priority.

The Germans didn't have dedicated cargo subs but did have the Milch Kuh-Milk Cows that were tankers subs for refueling other U-boats at sea. They ran many subs to Japan during the war transporting war materiel and quite a few were turned over and used by the Japanese.
