Michael Jackson Lived Here
Michael Jackson is famous for a number of eccentricities--the gloves, the surgical masks, the petting zoo at his California estate, Neverland--but no one ever accused him of not living well. When he came to New York for five months to record an album in 1999, he could have rented anywhere he wanted. The fact that he chose this Upper East Side townhouse, and was willing to pay $75,000 a month to live there, must mean it's pretty swell.
Today the house is on the market for $15 million. Fully renovated and ready for move-in, the six-story home on East 74th Street, close to Central Park, is currently one of the best houses available in Manhattan, according to brokerage firm Alice B. Mason's George van der Ploeg. While most townhouses are 20 feet wide, this one has a 25-foot-wide brick and limestone facade.
At 12,000 square feet, the sunny home has six bedrooms and a guest apartment. The living room runs 35 feet in length, and the original elevator serves six of the house's seven levels. Other period details include a mahogany staircase, mosaic floor in the vestibule and working fireplaces in nearly every room.
The home's first owner, Stephen L. Stetson, ran the eponymous hat company at the turn of the last century. In 1899, Stetson commissioned this townhouse, modeled on the 17th-century mansions that line Paris' Place des Vosges. In building the Beaux Arts-style house, Stetson joined neighbors Andrew Carnegie and Joseph Pulitzer in creating the prestigious enclave that is today's Upper East Side.
Artist Marc Chagall was another resident of the house, during his exile from Nazi-occupied Paris in the 1940s. While living here, he painted a number of murals for the Metropolitan Opera that still hang in the opera house lobby at Lincoln Center. The north-facing studio he worked in opens to a roof terrace with open views.
