If I could be a drunk Like Rhett Butler I'd be a drunk...or a curmudgeon like Spencer Tracy I'd be a curmudgeon..

Since I'm neither I'll continue to wear different hats and remain hopeful for a sunny day now and again....

How come no one wants to be a curmudgeon like Don Rickles?

Who says we don't? We just don't have the talent. What a life he has lived, all those times with Frank, and being on Johny Carson, and friends with them all. What's not to admire?

It is a documented fact that W.C. Fields played golf best when soused.

There is a great book written by Carlotta Monti, his long time partner, about him. Very interesting. He used to have microphones along the walkway up to his house, so he could hear what people were saying as they approached and left. he also used to have money stashed in banks all around the country from his vaudeville days, but under various names. Most of it has not been recovered.

I like to have a martini,
Two at the very most.
After three I'm under the table,
after four I'm under my host.

If we are going to list out some of the great curmudgeons of the past, we can not forget the legendary:
H.L. Mencken
Ah, yes--the original "Equal Opportunity Offender". One of my heroes, right along with Rickles.

Geez, people call us "Curmudgeons" like it's a bad thing... Now, get off my lawn. :D :p lol

I'm writing a biography of James Oviatt, the man behind the "Alexander & Oviatt" (later "Oviatt's") haberdashery and the Oviatt Building in downtown Los Angeles.

An reliable firsthand source has revealed the following to me. In the 1940s, W.C. Fields asked his close friend James Oviatt to hold $60,000 for him in the haberdashery's safe. Later, when Fields lay dying, Oviatt was at his side. Fields told Oviatt that he could keep the $60,000. (You heard it here first, folks!)

Monti's book while entertaining, isn't all it's cracked up to be.

A lot of the myths about Fields, many of which that he spread himself such as the bank account myth, have been debunked by his family and friends that knew him, and two better researched biographies: W. C. Fields: A Biography http://www.amazon.com/W-Fields-Biography-James-Curtis/dp/0375402179

And Man on the Flying Trapeze: The Life and Times of W. C. Fields http://www.amazon.com/Man-Flying-Trapeze-Times-Fields/dp/0393318400/ref=pd_sim_b_1

Fields probably didn't want Hattie his estranged wife to get that sixty grand.

Since my wife and I moved back to Chicago, I tend to have to drive a fair distance to go to a party or bar. Consequently, I rarely have more than a beer with dinner. I'm usually pretty wired on Coca-Cola or coffee to go to bed early but it IS tough to find something retro-themed that goes late. Even the burlesque shows are over and done by 11.

I've got a list of bars and clubs on my lists to still check out but always either to tired from work or just cant afford going. I think the main reason is I just don't have to many friends in the LA area, to make plans and go out. And many friends I do know aren't interested in what I am into. This month the only plan I have is to go to the Vintage Expo in Santa Monica and perhaps the Art Deco Queen Mary event in September. Yet, to go to the Cicada Club and Bordello. I'm not a big fan or Burlesque though. I love Vaudevillian shows and stage performances more then what Burlesque is today which is more striptease. Other than that, I can't think of anything that recreates a vintage atmosphere which I have already mentioned. Oh! Visiting the Hearst Castle, perhaps I should finally go and do there walk about. The last tour at night recreates a 1930s evening where the members and staff all dress up. What I would really love is something like the Cotton Club, dining in and performances that last all night in the center of the room with live jazz music. I can't think of anything like that other then Cicada. [huh]
