Is seven grand too much for a hat?

I know most of you probably have seen this but this is my fist time at noticing Montecristi website and their $7500.00 "Optimo Naturale" hat.

I'll say that again $7500.00 for one hat.

Would you dare wear a $7500.00 hat? What if it were breezy? Light Drizzle.

$7500 I'm sure is two years wages at least for the guy who wove it.

Why is this hat worth $7500.00? Am I missing something?

No....

No hat is worth that much. It's just straw after all, right? Or is it gold?

It's going to cost me more than $20,000 to send my kid to college in a couple years, for crying out loud. What kind of idiot buys a hat for $7500.

I will never pay more for a hat then I paid for my Plymouth! It's a big time waste of money to throw all that at one dumb hat! I love hats but never to spend more then $150.00! I don't feel it's worth it to spend any large sum of cash on something you're going to wear.

It says on www.montecristihats.com that their most expensive panama hat costs $20,000....

Precise Link: http://www.montecristihats.com/panama.htm

Montecristi panama hats start at $350. Our best panama is $20,000. Fineness of weave is the principal determinant of price. You may order any Panama hat in the following quality ranges.
Regular Select $350—$475
Fino Select $500—$975
Extra Fino $1000—$2975
Super Fino $3000 and up

Does it matter?
It's all relative. If you have millions then $7500 is a drop in the bucket. If you can barely pay the rent on your studio basement apartment then $50 may be too much.

Relativitiy plays a part...but you should still get your money's worth.

Again, open invite to anyone who wants to go to Montecristi and see how these people are getting quite wealthy off of very poor folks.

No price is too much.

I am a firm believer in buyer beware. If someone thinks that a hat justifies a $7500 price tag, then they should buy it if they can afford it. It is the same way with just about anything. Marketing and fast, infomercial type sales pitches really work. That is why it is buyer beware. Cars come to mind. Some cars cost thousands more than others and are far less reliable. Real estate is another marketing hype. I can't imagine what someone could say about a hat that would make me part with $7500 even if I had it to buy hats. Just think of all the great hats you could have for that amount of money. If someone is willing to pay for it, it is worth the price. I think a $7500 hat will be sold to a fool with alot money he or she does not know what to do with. I am a pipe collector and am always surprised that people will pay $1000 for a pipe that will smoke no better than a $200 pipe or even some $25 pipes. They will always have what they consider a good reason to pay as much as they do. I am sure that the $7500 price tag is there because someone has paid it before. Good luck to the sellers and the buyers. I know I would never pay more than about $150 for a hat.

I think some folks will buy something that expensive just to show off that they have the money. At that price, it is not so much the "quality" of the product as something else. It is for "show," perhaps.

I know of a fur felt hat that sold for $10,000 but that was because it had a diamond hat band on it. Me? I took the cheapie way out: I have a black Stetson cowboy hat with a $50 rhinestone hat band. That way, I can be a Rhinestone Cowgirl and not spend a lot of money; for an investment of about $100 (hat and band), I have just as much bling as the wearer of the diamond-banded hat.

With some folks it is this: I am so successful and have so much money, I can buy a $120,000 bottle of wine created at the time of Napolean (and when I open it and drink it, it will probably taste like stale vinegar. Oh, well...)

Now that I have my own Montecristi (panamabob-style) to compare it with, the hats on Montecristi.com are so overpriced as to be laughable. Just looking at the photos, their $425 hat looks like a Grueso compared to mine. The weave on the one I got from Panamabob for $150 looks a lot more like their $2000 "Teardrop" or their $5000 "3-point dress". I wonder if the weaver sees any of that inflated profit. Hmmmm.....

There's a law of dininishing returns. You can buy a $150 hat, a $300 hat, and so on. At some point you're paying many times the price for an infinitesmal increase in quality.

In short: not even if I was The Donald.

I would not buy it and buy a decent hat for less (a lot less), save a bit, and gove the rest to charity. It is just clothing in a way and if you had it you would be afraid to wear it.
