I don't see what all the hatred towards umbrellas is about. It's true that a trench coat and proper fedora can fulfill the same role and in some cases be more practical, but umbrellas are not a bad option either. I usually use a trench coat and fedora but if I'm wearing one of my nicer hats such as my homburg (which I don't want to get wet) I'll carry an umbrella if the forcast indicates it'll be rainy. Umbrellas do not make one more or less manly, they just have their pros and cons compared to other forms of rain protection. The wind can make carrying an umbrella awkward but fortunately modern technology has invented umbrellas which never turn inside out.

Well, not to speak for anyone else, but, I have several umbrellas, I use them and am darn thankful for them. I have one that is a favorite, sort of a larger size like what is used on a golf course, and one thing I like about it, I can use it to "escort" anyone around me to and from a door or car and help them from getting soaked.

If I were a single man, I would think an umbrella would perhaps be used in meeting some gals by way of escorting them under it's protection and then inquire regarding seeing them again. You never know....

So true! We actually got some sprinkles last night. Honestly, I'm looking forward to seeing how my hats will hold up. We were supposed to have rain today, but we got to the high 80s. Sunny.

The Lounge is full of good info on hats in the rain.. protecting hats
and what hats do good in all kinds of weather.
While the search may not be the best... it does work.
nothing worthwhile is easy... this includes the Lounge.

I hate to bring up such an old thread, especially given my newbie status, but in searching the topic of rain-worthiness, I can only find threads which have considerable age on them. I own 5 modern Stetsons purchased within the last year, all Royal Deluxe or Excellent grade.

I'm wondering if Stetson is still using "powders" which are susceptible to rain damage or if they've made upgrades. Do any of you have experience with recently manufactured Royal Deluxe quality or better Stetsons?

Hi Mark,
The first felt hat I ever bought was a modern Royal Deluxe Temple. I have worn it commuting in rain and snow many times over the years and it has held up as well as I could have expected. When it gets soaked I do dry it out properly. The brim got a little wiggly at one point but nothing major (and easily fixed). All in all I have been very satisfied with it. In my eyes, hats are meant to be worn and meant to protect from the elements. I wouldn’t get worried about an overcoat getting wet, so I don’t worry about my hats getting wet.
I don’t know anything about the powder so I can’t comment on that point.

Any hat should be able to handle a light shower from time to time. The durability of a hat shows when it gets drenched. I don’t have any modern stetsons so I can’t make comment. But when I know it’s going to be pouring buckets I usually grab a Akubra and leave my good hats at home. I know my beaver custom hats were designed for that abuse but I want them looking as good as they can for as long as they can. But that’s just me.

No problem. We love old threads, and the previous posts give a glimpse into the knowledge base of Members who may not participate any longer.

I have (counts on fingers) four modern Stetsons from the 150th Anniversary collection in RD and Excellent, and an older modern Stetson in Imperial Grade. I've worn the Excellent in some fairly bad weather with no ill-effects, but not so much the RDs. Usually, when I am expecting to possibly get hit hard, I'll go with an Akubra, custom, or a vintage I trust.

I'm not sure about the powder dyes, though. I'm not certain if we have any info on that.

I have a 150th Anniversay Stetsonian. It got a bit damp from the rain and the brim went wonky even after carefully allowing it to dry. I ended up having to send it to Mike at NW to put it in his brim press to straighten. So now I avoid wearing it when there is a threat of rain....which come to think of it is pretty much every day here in Vancouver.
