Is Christmas Ruined Forever?

I guess I'm a child of the Cold War, but when I saw all those references to lurking and creeping and watching I kept thinking "KGB".

:p:D

There is a beautiful rendition of O Helga Natt out there somewhere. I heard it each day in the town center during the holiday season when I was in China. BUT no one kmew the identity of the vocalist. I've probably listened to every baritone Swede available and have not found the likes of the one I'm searching for.

My gawd man. Much of a small child's enjoyment is involved with all kinds of imaginative wonderment. Story books....Peter Pan..happy tales of fantasy. Don't take that away simply because of an extreme position of your critical adulthood reasoning. He'll learn soon enough about the real world and how to deal with it with your forthcoming instruction,of course..but allow him those precious memories of youth. It doesn't last long.

My feelings exactly!

I can not even conceive of my childhood without Santa.....and I am thankful that my parents went along with it!

Those were wonderful Decembers that I will keep very close to my heart as long as I live!

having said that....

Happy Christmas everybody!!!!:D

Dear Editor:

I am 8 years old.

Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.

Papa says, "If you see it in THE SUN it's so."

Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O'Hanlon

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Apology gratefully accepted. The over- commercialization of Christmas has probably got me a bit on edge this year. It's changed so much over the years it's barely recognizable as the same holiday I loved all those years ago.

We try to spend Christmas in Italy. They celebrate Christmas like we did in the 'old days'. i.e.. NOT commercialised

What can I say? Father Christmas came to our house again. A few years ago I remember my daughters panic that the log burning stove was in the fireplace. I had to take it out Christmas Eve, Never got round to putting it back, but we have lovely open fires now.

That explains why Father Christmas woke me up wanting to know if I had some Neosporin
for a slight burn. ;)

It wasn't ruined at my house either.
Despite the fact I decorated the tree in the most minimal fashion, it was a sign that my recent job change has kept me too busy to drag boxes out this year. [huh]
We saved up for a big ticket item, that has yet to work out (waiting on the right combo of price and mileage), so one of us didn't buy presents. However, Father Christmas came to our house bringing a few gifts for my wife, and a few gifts I couldn't do without, given to me by each of the dogs. :p While a new bath mat and Calphalon non-stick frying pan aren't on everyone's list, it was greatly appreciated. Plus the deal was too good to pass up. ;)
Still searching several online sites for the big ticket item, plus I have an uncle looking as well since he's in the business.
And no James it's NOT a Cadillac. They are practically giving those away, at least where I live.
