Honestly, if you want a dishtowel with Jesus on it, why don't you make it yourself? There are iron-on transfers, embroidery, puff paint...seriously! Also, I would think there are collector's plates that have Jesus on them. I'm sure you could eat off of those too if you really wanted to.

Anyway, to be quite honest, for something to be discriminatory, it has to do with it being a systematic, institutionalized practice of discrimination. For instance, a woman who is plus size and can't find a nice party dress in her size, would, in my opinion, be discrimination on the clothing industry's part. Why? Because demand DOES exist for large clothing as there are plenty of people who are not a size 8 in this country. Also, larger sized people are often discriminated against in a myriad of ways in society as well.

So, your issue is not discrimination because 1) Not that many people want Jesus towels and 2) This nation is largely a Christian nation (institutionally), regardless of what the First Amendment says.

Give your head a shake. The motto of the USA is Trust in God!

In God We Trust" became the national motto of the United States by Act of Congress July 30, 1956.
"36 USC Sec. 186, TITLE 36 - PATRIOTIC SOCIETIES AND OBSERVANCES, CHAPTER 10 - PATRIOTIC CUSTOMS, Sec. 186. National Motto - STATUTE - The national motto of the United States is declared to be 'In God we trust.'" Source: (July 30, 1956, ch. 796, 70 Stat. 732.)

"In God We Trust" does not necessarily mean we have to be Christian. There are many religions in the U.S. and that motto embraces most of them.

I don't think its political correctness...but rather perhaps the idea for people ...that it's disrespectful to -eat- off of , or clean up with towels or dishes that have the Lord on them.

I know that I certainly would not consider choosing to worship the Lord via eating on plates with his image, or displaying a dishtowel with Him on it.

Maybe -that's- why there are not such products.

Hear, hear and well put, Miss Neecerie. I think you've completely nailed the point clearly and succinctly. There would no doubt be an uproar with some if dish towels and plates with Jesus on them were marketed. Look at the news in the last few days - a woman's darn-near stoned for letting her students name a Teddy bear Mohammed.

Looking at it another way, there are those who would use and others who would protest a dish towel or hand towel depicting the American flag.

That said, here are a few items that might be of interest from Archie McPhee.

For the last time I am not wanting a dish towel to wipe my face with Jesus or a plate to eat on with Jesus. I showed examples of scripture plates and voiced I would like Happy Birthday stuff. Never mind. I have never since being online since 2002 found such biased liberal minded folks as a whole anywhere on any forum.
I feel like everything is ok here except Christianity at this point. It should be duly noted in the rules to warn others IMHO.

First, there is plenty of discussion in the threads linked on the first page of this thread, respectful discussion I might add, about religion and why people would like to put the Jesus back into the holiday season. This thread takes a different angle. It's kind of a wacky angle. Thus the response from the board at large.

Second, I assure you, this is the most religion-friendly board I've ever participated in, so perhaps you and I are meeting in the middle.

Third, I think this thread is more evidence of why religion is as worthy a topic of being banned by the FL powers as politics.

I dont understand what being 'liberal' has to do with anything in the above statement.

That's simply because you don't really care to understand how or why it is being used. Evidentally it strikes more a political cord of liberal to you.
I hear you,Foofoogal. Some have learned not to post on subjects like this...because they always end up the same...and we are surrounded.
You can explain till you're blue in the face....or not at all. I bet you can guess what I suggest.....

Well thanks for the blunt judgment call without knowing anything of what I was talking about. For all you know I could agree with all she was saying, therefor your tone to me would have more than likely changed, but you have put me on some other 'team' when all I asked for was an explanation.

Foofoogal, if you wouldnt mind explaining, but considering the tone of the thread, I would understand if you just skip it :)

Excuse me for interjecting. I have tried to refrain from commenting, but this, well...

Here's the thing: The moment you start portraying yourself as a victim, then you become one. The simple statement "and we are surrounded" implies attack and persecution. And what is happening in this forum, and in the country, is nothing of the kind. No one is invading your homes or place of worship and telling you not to rejoice in the life and death and teaching of Jesus Christ. No one is shipping you off to concentration camps because of your beliefs or your blood. No one is out-lawing the display of your chosen religious icons in your home or at your temple or church. What IS happening is change - a more diverse culture is taking the place of the old. And that's what happens when you live in a country founded on freedom - including the freedom of religion, any religion or no religion at all. Secularism is not evil, it's a choice. And just because we are changing, which is MANDATORY to our continued existence, does not mean that YOU, or anyone who believes as you do, has to be sacrificed.

So what if the Ten Commandments are no longer in a courthouse or school? Are they in your home and your heart? Isn't that enough? Someone doesn't like a nativity scene on public property, so be it. Does that mean a church can't have one? A resounding NO! I see them all the time!

So, please, consider this - the case is only made, and the message carried, when those making it or carrying it are willing to hear the other side through and refrain from passing judgment or assuming a defensive position. And, most of all, accept that difference exists and that it is good.

I do apologise for making it seem so personal. I just think that Foofoogal has herself in a useless battle(for a lack of better words). I can see her desperation..and it is nothing new. I see her points in this thread...and against my better judgement...got involved. However...I'm outa here!

To be quite honest, Jesus doesn't belong in Wall-Mart unless he has the capital to sustain a presence and that means a willing buying public and so far there are more people buying Honey Nut cheerios than Iotola Cola or jesus collectors spoons.

Christ, like Brigham Young and Lincoln don't bring in the dollars necessary for napkin manufacturers to produce them in bulk.

I'm still upset that not all Wal-Mart stores cary Starship Enterprise models though I go online to fill that need.

"Yes in God We Trust", though Jesus is not on the dollar bill for a reason and that's because the Constitution states freedom of religion which in it's very essence means the god of the muslims is just as important as the god of the christians or the pegans.

I understand your point and know how vehiment people can become over what is seen sometimes as religious persecution, though the absence of goods at a store hasn't band such goods simply means they aren't in high enough demand.

The point is that the rest of society isn't really as into Jesus as you might be and that should be okay, we are a capitalist society.

okay.

somewhat less heavy handed. In a public forum you have to expect people will disagree with you. No point complaining when he responses ain't positive. I am surprised - and happy - to see some rational consensus being formed re: a religious issue on FLounge. Doesn't happen very much.

Believe me dude. I ain't a victim. Ignorance is bliss I guess. I am at peace. Thank you very much. Amazing the younger generation is willing to throw away all the work of the earlier generations even when their peers are dying at this moment. History tends to repeat itself but the history we are making currently we may never recover from. Merry Christmas.

Foofoogal, if you are unhappy about the "liberal" arguments some have posted against products featuring Jesus, let me offer one from a religious point of view. Jesus went to the Temple and He smashed up the merchants' tables, being quite unhappy about the association of religion with commercialism. Somehow I don't see that He would be quite pleased either being associated with mass commercial products made in China by people who really don't care about the significance at all for the profit of anonymous corporate shareholders (who might or might not even share the faith). If you really want a plate with "Happy Birthday Jesus" or something of that sort and you find yourself unable to make it, why not commission a local artisan who actually shares your faith and who understands what you want from the product to make one for you?

Added to which, a local artisan will be getting a fair price for their workmanship and be working in reasonable condtions.

You're all over the map here....younger generations not respecting their elders...the war....earlier, beheading...history repeating itself...what? What is the problem here? Liberals? Atheists? I'm just not sure what you are talking about.
