Empire magazine and Ain’t It Cool News are reporting that a fifth Indiana Jones film is in the works — at least according to producer Frank Marshall.

Shia LaBeouf, who played the motorcycle-riding Mutt Williams in last year’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” hinted to the BBC that a new film was being planned, and producer Marshall confirmed it with some key reservations.

“It’s really about the script,” Marshall told Empire. “Once we see that, we’ll see. We’re not going to wait another 20 years. We’d all love to make another one. I’m anxious to hear the idea!”

Of course, the script was the holdup for “Crystal Skull.” Director Steven Spielberg, producer George Lucas and star Harrison Ford all had to agree on the idea and the script, and apparently several ideas were floated over the years — and several A-list screenwriters tapped — before David Koepp’s screenplay (based on Jeff Nathanson’s and Lucas’ story) got the go-ahead.

Depending on your point of view, it was either a thrill to see a new Indy or, to borrow a phrase made popular in the aftermath of the film, it “nuked the fridge.”

Spielberg, Lucas and Ford are all on board for the new Indiana Jones, according to Marshall … assuming they get a good idea.

What would you like to see Indiana Jones do in the new film? Or would you rather stick with memories of “Raiders of the Lost Ark”?

I knew they'd do another one, Crystal Skull made lots of money.

Personally, I was vastly disappointed in Crystal Skull - I thought it was a sloppy mess, way below Spielberg's usual work, quite apart from being an Indy film - so I think I'll be waiting for cable for the next one.

I agree. ROLA was excellent, and Last Crusade was a close second. CS just seemed a way to make everyone a quick buck.

There's plenty of stories and options for a fifth film. They dropped the ball on 4, I enjoyed it, but not in the way I enjoyed 1-3. I haven't completely given up on the franchise, as long as they find a good artifact that is... y'know... mythical.

Especially when there is still Atlantis, Tablet of Destiny, the Philosopher's Stone, The Fountain of Youth, The Holy Lance, The Cap of Hades, The Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy to look for.

Lets hope they don't mess it up again.

I loved LC also, but it - actually Indy - did not have the same feel as RotLA.

After RotLA, Indy lost a lot of what I see as the seriousness, and more important, singularity of the character in the tight situations he was in.

Although Marion accompanied him in a lot of the film, she wasnt his constant sidekick - in fact, no one was, and she was minimally involved in his 'heroics.' He did what he did largely by himself. In ToD, there was the the kid and the blond with him pretty much all through the flim. In LC, first Elsa, and then dad was with him.

Connery was a good thing, but a defining part of what made Raiders Raiders was that Indy was the singularly resourceful hero.

In CS, Indy had a whole slew of sidekicks.

In each of those sequels, Indy was increasingly dependent on these people. As each film progressed, Indy relied more and more on the resourcefulness of others. To me, this subtracted from what made him Indy in RotLA.

I will see it if the lead is still Indiana Jones Snr. I draw the line at Shia LaBeouf being the lead. Not that I have anything against him, but he is not Indiana Jones.

Atlantis: Fate of Atlantis computer game, set for '39.
Philosopher's Stone: IIRC one of the novels, which are canon if Lucas is consistent with his policies.
Holy Lance: Spear of Destiny comic-series/graphic-novel, see previous.
Noah's Ark: BTDT, another novel. Ditto Stonehenge, the Oracle of Delphi, the supposed "Hall of Records" under the Sphinx, the Tower of Babel...
So what's left?

I agree totally. I just saw it again over the weekend. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it. I didn't like the Temple of Doom when I saw it in the theater, and still didn't like it last weekend. The first and the third were excellent. I didn't like the Crystal Skulls at all. They just lost the magic altogether. I doubt I'd see another chapter. I'd prefer to keep the good memories.

I've been a hardcore Indy fan for years. I greatly enjoyed "Crystal Skull"; it had an element of comedy in it, that was absent from the other films.

If Indy V is being made, I'm excited!!

While not the best of the series, I enjoyed Crystal Skull. The time frame was moving toward (or perhaps already out of) the Golden Era, and Indy was obviously in a different world than the previous films.
However, as long as they don't put him in a post-Beatles era film, I'd be interested.
Realistically, I think 1960 is about as far up as they can bring the character without him seeming like a total anacrhronism.

My 2cents

I would love to see Indy V. I don't think that Crystal Skull was nearly as weak as Temple of Doom (surviving a nuclear blast in a fridge is no more outlandish than jumping out of a plane in an inflatable raft) and I liked the off-kilter family dynamic of Indy, Marion, and Mutt. It would be cool to see all three of them in another movie.
