I stumbled upon this joint.....lurked for around a half hour.......signed up, but never posted....forgot......rediscovered the joint around a year later.....the rest is history........

To date, I'm a member/lurker of around 30 forums of which I post regularly on maybe five.

I've been online for 15 years or so and have lurked on many a forum and mailing list, but rarely, if ever, posted anything. In fact, there's one discussion listserv (possibly the most interesting list on the net) that I've been on for more than 10 years and have only posted a half-dozen times. But when I found the FL, I not only signed on immediately, but began to actually post and participate. With over 1000 posts behind me, I think I may be in danger of losing my status as a professional lurker...

Yes, and now you hang around the Outerwear section to terrorize poor Hadley when she pokes her pretty head in the door.:)

Our Lurkers include the very, very famous. That much we know.

Is it bad that the first person I thought of when you said that was Adam Savage from mythbusters? He of the several akubras....

Probably not the most famous of the famous, but I know he browses the intertubes on a regular basis.

I was a lurker for about 4-5 years. I always thought I was not vinatge enough to join or post and I was really shy. I met fellow lounger Frankie Lamb at the military museum I worked at about a year ago and he told me not to be shy and join and post. So I did. I am so glad I did. I have even gone to some FL although not as many as I wish I could go to due to my budget and schedule constraints. I encourage lurkers to join and participate and become a part of the Fedora Lounge Family. Its a great bunch of people.

Past the threshold, a lurker in your midst

I joined ages ago and participate from time to time but mostly, I lurk.

This is the place I come to when I feel utterly ridiculous for wearing the things I do or loving the things I love. I wish this place existed beyond the confines of my computer screen, I swear I'd be a more active participant.

You have a good point. (But how do the guests know that these surprises exist? ;))

You have been a member soooooooooooooooooooooo long, from what I remember the main page says something to the tune of, 'get full access with a log in', or something like that.

I'm afraid I'm lapsing into lurkerdom - I'm just so flat out these days as I'm studying on top of work as well as working on some personal projects that when I do log on I seem to lack the mental energy to compose my thoughts in a post. So I just happily read and relax. Which isn't quite fair, I suppose, as it's like leaving everyone else to make the conversational effort while I just sit back and don't contribute.

This is a nice thread to say this: in my town there are a couple of teenage boys 15, 16 years old that for various reasons their fathers are not in their lives. Maybe because I wear my hats crooked and I sing off key they have kind of attached themselves to me. We talk about things like what manhood means, how to treat a lady and various other topics.

I direct them to the Fedora Lounge and specific threads to read viewpoints, gain a different insight than I can offer and see how it may influence their perspectives.

Specifically, I urge them to read people I have grown to respect here such as Marc, HadleyH, Lizziemaine, RBH, JamesPowers, Widebrim and others. I guess many more than I probably should mention.

The whole point is this: what goes on here is viewed and digested by many more people and for a variety of reasons that would never have occurred to me with these young men. Perhaps they have given me more than I will ever give them. I am the lucky one here. And so is the Fedora Lounge. :)

Nice to see you're still popping by Mojito. Id noticed that we hadn't seen terribly much of our Sydney flapper for a bit :)

Best of British with the studies as well.

As for lurkers, those will be the blood red eyes you see peering out of the bushes...

I lurked for several months before joining, and sometimes I stop and think about how many of the folks whose posts convinced me to sign up have since faded away -- a lot of them mentioned in the Loungers You Miss thread. I hope at least some of them are still lurking and know that their contributions back those many years ago were appreciated.

At the same time, I remember a number of folks who were new here around the same time I was, and they're still vital contributors today. A salute to my fellow members of the Fedora Lounge Class of 2006! (And if you're no longer regularly active, but still lurking -- speak up and be counted!)

Right back at you!

As one of those who is a daily lurker, and only an occasional poster, I say thank you to all those who are continually willing to post their hats/jackets/thoughts, and keep me (and the other lurkers) thoroughly entertained.

Bravo, and keep up the good work!

I lurked 'til the great 'Johnnyphi Hat Auction' was about to commence. To think I didn't even bid on a single darned hat! :eusa_doh:

I joined in January, 2006 to answer a question from Matt Jones about putting a date to his vintage Navy peacoat. Since then I have answered a bunch of questions about peacoats and other Navy cold weather wear. Also I sometimes participate in discussions about leather flight jackets and motorcycle jackets. As a former military pilot and current motorcyclist, both topics are of interest to me.

A little over a year ago I finally got all of my notes and photographs together and wrote an article on the dating of vintage Navy peacoats, which is in a sticky at the top of the Outerwear section. This was the result of several years of research on this heretofore arcane subject.

Although I don't post that frequently, I read most of the discussions in the Outerwear section. I do sometimes poke around in the other sections as well and occasionally find a gem of a thread. For instance, yesterday I ran across the blues thread started by Feraud a year or so back. As a blues DJ for ten years, and a former rock n roll/blues harp player, I find most discussions of blues music to be fascinating. So I had to add my input to the thread.

Thanks to MK and the bartenders for the time they spend keeping this place on an even keel. I am a moderator on another forum and know how time consuming the job can be. Especially when a problem child makes frequent appearances.

Well done, sir! The spirit of community is found here and can be displayed in microcosm for young adults who are searching!

And by the way, to maintain topic, I lurked around and digested most of the Hats section for three months before signing up. Don't get away from that one much, except to the Connoisseur and occasionally, this section.
