My nephew's parents got me a subscription to the Sunday New York Times.

That's right... the "paper of record", "the old grey lady". I woke up this morning with the entire world at my rustic front door.

The ads, the articles, and the holy of holies, the Review of Books.

This has been a great morning to sit and drink my coffee. :eusa_clap

Good show, Matthew!

There is no better paper in all the land for a Sunday morning. I have been a subscriber of the Sunday NY Times for 20 years. I especially enjoy the Book Review and I am sure that many of you have seen me quote from it.

Also, Matthew, I am sure you saw the article on bringing "Atlas Shrugged" to the screen in the Arts and Leisure section.

Yes, it is a wonderful paper, though, of course as with any media, you need to keep your antennae up to screen and sift for the facts within the frameworks. ;)

That's a great gift to receive Matthew. I keep telling myself that I have to start reading it. As stated above, Hem gets it every Sunday. I really don't know why I don't read it when he is finished, although I know I should. I do subscribe to their online news, and enjoy reading the articles there. I find them to be so informative. Just about anything and everything that one needs information on can be found on their website.

I just subscribed to the podcasts of their book reviews, theater and movie reviews, and food reviews. They are all free. If you have an iPod, I highly recommend them. The NPR On Point podcasts are also really wonderful and insightful. It's nice to be able to learn while driving in the car, and they can make long walks or trips to the gym a little more fun and interesting.

Have you ever watched CBS Sunday Morning? If not, it's a great and informative light news show with short stories about people and things that are going on. It's another fun way to learn new and interesting things about the world.

Nothing beats a relaxing Sunday morning with a good cup of coffee, the Times and CBS Sunday morning. It's the perfect way to start a new week.
Enjoy your Sunday mornings:)

I love getting the NY Times Sunday. It's a paper you can easily enjoy the current news stuff on Sunday...then work your way through the magazines and all the rest over the week.

Also, the Sunday morning gasbag shows (as Calvin Trillen calls them) usually quote some investigative piece from the front page - and you can pick it up and read it all yourself. Smart and sophisticated.

Yes, aside from being slanted, biased and disingenuous.........it's a great paper.;)

I don't have to worry about that so much. Journalists are trained in journalism, it isn't particularly hard to know more about any given subject than they do. You just sift out the uninformed opinions and blatant misstatements of fact to get to the usable info.

The Crossword is first-rate.

The ads make my inner poor consumer sad... :(

That is my absolute favorite Sunday morning scenario :)

CBS Sunday morning is probably my absolute favorite television program. I adore Charles Osgood. I think he's a wonderful personality, and the program is always a joy to watch.

I'm dying to get my hands on the Times, especially to try (and likely fail at) the infamous crossword.

I get the Weekender package with The Weekender. Admittedly, I never finish the entire paper though.

Oh, I hear you Matthew! Nothing beats seeing adds for a brand new $30,000 watch! Or ads similar to that for other expensive jewels, handbags, shoes, and clothes. Oh how I ogle:)

Yes, it certainly is an enjoyable program. I'm a big Charles Osgood fan as well. I also love the last segment that Bill Geist does. He can get some hilarious stories. It's just a very light note to end an exceptional enjoyable and light program. I thoroughly enjoy any program that makes learning fun:) Glad to hear that their are other fans out there. One of my closest friends lives in New Jersey. She and I have the same taste in politics, learning, news programs, etc... She used to spend her Sunday mornings reading the Times over a cup of coffee and then watching Meet The Press. I was spending a weekend with her about a year ago, and down right refused to watch Meet The Press with her. IMO, I just can't stand it!:) I turned on Sunday Morning, she had never heard of it. Well needless to say, she is now addicted to Sunday Morning, and has reminded me a few times of how grateful she that I introduced her to it. She say's her Sunday mornings are now more relaxed for it. She does exactly what I do, always flipping on Fox News Watch for the last half hour of the show, after Sunday Morning is over.
Oh, I also love how Sunday Morning ends the show with scenes from a beautiful rural area somewhere in the world. The pelicans this morning were lovely. What wonderful prehistoric creatures they are:)

Well whoop-de-doo to you!:p :D :p
I actually love my view, I have a skyline view of the city of Boston. For a view of the city, it can't be beat.
Also, I get out of the city often on the weekends to head up to the white mountains. So, if I really need rural, it's quite easy to get. But, IMO, for me nothing beats the city. I'm just the type of gal who wouldn't like being in the country. Good for a visit, definitely, but just not for me as a permanent abode. Although, when I do finally have a family I might move to a more rural area. There is a beautiful neighborhood 1 mile from the Boston border that would be a really nice place to live:)

But do you get to see PENGUINS? Or MOOSE? Or POLAR BEARS? Or, my personal favorite...PUFFINS?

I live in the biggest, most built up city in Alaska.

Moose bed down in backyards and will occasionally walk through downtown. I live a block from a reindeer (admittedly privately owned). Black and brown bears live year round in the city itself in our many parks and the greenbelts surrounding streams, which contain trout and have yearly salmon runs. Once in a while they have to be run out of schoolyards. (the bears, not the salmon)

We've got beavers and foxes and every other small mammal (AND a tree frog that hibernates underground). There are two different wolf packs in the mountains just 5-10 miles from where I sit right now. Bald eagles are a regular sight on downtown buildings and we are plagued with ravens and a million other birds, many of which migrate to wetlands within the city limits every year from down south.

Beluga whales swim in the inlet visible from downtown, and there are 3 active volcanos visible on a good day.

Polar bears are north, puffins west and penguins waaaaaaay south. :D

The first day my aunt and uncle moved into their new community and moose stepped over their fence, into the back yard and proceeded on to the next yard to snack on their plants! Well my aunt wandered out to the porch and called across " what you guys won't do to impress the new neighbours" lol lol
Just figured I'd share, all the wildlife talk made me think of it.

Wow. That is awesome. Moose are particularly awesome.

I have always lived in urban areas, so all I have is CBS Sunday Morning for wildlife watching (and nature shows). I'm bad outdoors (during the summer at least: sunburn, mosquitoes, heat rash, etc) but I am eager to go Moose watching. I hear Vermont has lots of Moose also? Alaska sounds pretty amazing in general though.

It's funny how context affects perception.

I'm amazed by the various new (to me) parts of city living down south, which to residents are ho-hum.

Living up here moose are just "there". You have to keep an eye out for them to walk into the road (though city moose actually look both ways) when driving. You make sure there aren't any in the yard when you let out the dogs and you just accept the delay if one wants to rest or eat on the bike trail.

I think it's pretty uniform that you really appreciate where you live when folks from else come to visit and you get the experience of seeing where you live through their eyes.

The wildlife here is semi-common, always a weird or funny story to accompany them though. We had another incident in a neighbourhood near mine where a gentleman going out to work found a cougar napping on his car!!! I can just see this one 'uh, honey, I think I'll have another cup of coffee'lol We're very fortunate though, none of these have resulted in an injury, and usually the proper authorities are able to removed the animal to it's rightful place.
