Hmph. That's Frank Richardson, a vaudevillian who shows up in many Fox films in 1929-30, often paired with the equally vaudevillian Marjorie White. That's a kind of singing designed for theatrical performance -- without amplification and without any post-production nonsense, and if you understand what it is, it can be quite engaging. Check out Frank and Marjorie in "Sunnyside Up," one of the best of the early talkie musicals, and you'll find them both quite enjoyable. So there.

(And I'll take them any day of the week over any of the overblown banshees that rank as pop stars today.)
