This item appeared this morning in a football-related forum:
Q. My county juror summons came in the mail for Monday...how do I not get selected?

A. It's easy: Wear a bow tie.

I'm serious. All you need to do is wear a bow tie, and there is no way that you will be selected for jury duty. They'll assume that you are either quirky & weird or super smart...and one side will nix you.

Since any of those three adjectives sounds good to me, I guess I should start wearing bow ties (hoping, of course, that at least a double-digit percentage of the population opts for the last option).

Working in law enforcement (scientific police-crime scene specialist), I usually wear a tie when summoned as a witness - but I always wear a bow tie when summoned as an expert witness. This motivates me to make an effort to be at least on par with the "super smart" image the bow tie is supposed to bestow on me ;).

Hi

I can't stand wearing a bow tie, anywhere, any time. My parent's old congressman and then senator Paul Simon wore one. Never could stand him. If I wore the bow tie, it would remind him of him. Part of I-55 is the Paul Simon memorial highway (or similar), and the symbol for it is a bow tie.

Hi

Michael was right and Sonny Corleone was wrong. Everything is PERSONAL, it's not just business. I try to make all of my decisions (like wearing a certain tie) based on logic and facts , like a business should. I find that I make decisions on my last experience with an item.

Shallow but True.

I have to say that's giving the guy a lot of power over your life, particularly if you really want to wear one but don't for this reason. If you want to wear one, wear it and to h$%*& with that guy.

As for this theory: "They'll assume that you are either quirky & weird or super smart...and one side will nix you."

I have a friend who is a bow tie wearing scientist and he has been selected for jury duty three times.[huh]
