I look like a goon in my new hat.

I look like some 1980's movie about 1930's gangsters, I'll have to get some one to take a pic of me with my "mean" face.

First hat, brims smaller than I expected, almost stingy I suppose. Not my bag so I'll use this as a practice hat, since it's dinged up, and then sell it off.

I guess I will be the first in a string of guys saying you look great in the hat, but I agree that you could definately go with a wider brim. The hat may look a bit better with a little rake to it though.[huh]

I think the hat's good on you. It's the style of trenchcoat that
brings you over the top as a cold war Soviet operative. ;)

Well, It was shipped in a box that was a hair too small, so the brim needs some TLC steam, and time to relax

As far as the Coat, it's my AWC from the Marines, tossed it on because I didn't feel like getting out of my crappy house clothes :) Plus to ham it up.

Unfortunately, the brim at some point in this hats life was crudely trimmed down. I'll play around with it, get used to steaming and shaping. Next on the hit list is a Fed 4 in Moonstone, and a 2nd or similar in Black.

I think that the proportions suit you quite well. It reminds me of the look that Alain Delon had in "Le Samourai" .

If I were you I'd keep the hat (although it could be expensive: if you watch the film you just may decide that you need a 1967 Citroen to go with the hat and trench!)

I look eerily similar to that man when I'm not all chubby (cut back drastically on smoking, so gained weight as a byproduct).

Actually I looked JUST like him when I came out of the middle east...

Hmm caught a youtube clip, his brims a bit wider, about what I wish mine was (le sigh...) Mine's 2" on front and back, and tapered on the sides to 1 7/8th. In the pics mine looks a bit wider than looks in person.

BUT! I put the same C Crown in mine as the dude from that movie! (but mines more pinched in front, might do it up like in that clip)

The trench is a bit over the top, your buddies may give you crap over it, but you have that P.I. look going for you. I on the other hand can not pull off that look off without cracking up when I look in the mirror [huh]

One of buddies kidded me about my 'new look' because he had never seen me in a fedora, he called me 'Charlie Chan' & I had to point out that Detective Inspector Chan of HPD always wore a homburg, clarifying that I am indeed a crime geek :eusa_doh:

That didn't happen to be a Stetson St. Regis homburg in its first life...did it? There has been a crazed scissor dude running around here lately! :D

Kidding, UWS, just kidding! ;)

My first two vintage hats were stingies; now I will not buy unless the brim is at least 2 3/8ths, and really prefer 2 1/2, which seems to have been a very common width (a standard width?) during the 30's-40's-mid50's period. I will only buy a brim wider than 2 5/8ths if it is a 'summer' hat, which in my definition includes thin-ribbons as well as panamas. It is difficult to lay off of the stingies, because there was a stretch when the hat manufacturers were giving into the desire for a car-friendly brim width but were producing absolutely fabulous felt; I think the cav edge reached its zenith during that stretch, and there were a multitude of special finishes to the felt - suede look, velour, peluche (long hair), some used names like casmere, Borsalino had its 'pesca' finish (peach). It seems this expensive effort broke the backs of the manufacturers and the wool stingies then became dominant, Coach Bryant of Univ of Ala with his 'hound's tooth' stingie, etc.

OK, Madcap, I guess I get it. With the brim crudely cut down to smaller than it looks in the photos, then it probably is a bust. I think you've got the right attitude about it: Use it as a trainer. Even the ribbon and sweatband and liner may be worth saving later on once you've got a hat or two (or more  ) you like to wear. You can definitely wear a fedora nicely - you just have not yet found a nice fedora.

Oh yea the ribbon is definitely worth saving! The first thing my dad said when he saw it was "Remember teh gangster movies, where the REALLY big guys had the hats with tall crowns, and narrow brims?"

Thats about what I look like:) The Trench coat is kind of part of that joke.
Now when I get a chance, I'll try it on with my suit, maybe it'll match a little better.

Madcap, Can you tell us who made the hat and any other information on the sweatband and liner? The proportions don't look bad in the picture and you may have options regarding what you can do with that hat should you elect to keep it. I'd like to see it with a sportcoat or suit.

it's partly about your attitude, if I may say so myself. My first hats were (and still are) stingy brims, and one of them is black. Whenever I first put on my suit (a pinstripe) and that black hat, all I could see was "gangster." After a while, I got used to it and no longer see it as "gangster." plus, I don't wear that hat with my pinstripe suit if I can avoid it too. So if you have it stuck in you're head that you look like a goon, than that's how you're going to wear the hat; but if you see it for what it really is, then you can change that. And the AWC really isn't helping either lol
I truly think the hat looks nice (as far as I can tell from the pic), you just need to wear it differently.
