That lid is wonderful. I want one. I think sizing-wise the brim and crown dimensions depend on the size of the dude under the hat. I think that is the problem with alot of the Indy hats, small guys like myself wearing a hat that fits a bigger, taller guy. [huh]

I want one too. I'm thinking steel or charcoal with deep burgundy trim. When I first saw these Depp as Dillinger pics, I thought TonyB. Tony could easily have made this hat. It has his name written all over it.

And that coat! I want one of those too. Now where can I rent a vault to store my coats and hats?

My philosophy has always been, leaving the house is enough reason to dress well. I see depp agrees- leaving the big house is enough reason to make sure your hat looks right ;)

MAN! How great would it be to work in a film like that and be paid off in wardrobe!
This film (and Mr. Depp) might make these fashions "cool" again.

My pal Lance shot me the preview of that flicker… I’ll go see it but, I haven’t high hopes for it.

As a film buff of early pre-code WB gangster pictures, you’d find that the hats in those films were a little different then the ones you see in the new release of “Public Enemy”. The early 30s had some great hats, and what I see most of in that clip do not measure up to the reverse taper and clean bold lines of the early 30s hats.

I’ve seen many a photo of Dillinger, and other bank robbers of the late 20s to 1934 period. They wore mostly light colored hats from what I’ve seen in photos. Also, boaters too! It seems that Hollywood is trying to change history again. Also, I see cars of post 1934 vintage in the trailer; you see the close up of a 35 model car! Also, in the poster is two 34 Chrysler Airflows… you’d never see two Airflows on the same street in 1934 Chicago… why you ask? Well, because the Airflow’s first year was a flop! They didn’t sell well. In 1934 you’d see mostly late 20s cars and 30-33 model cars. You would see a few new ’34 models but, not that many.

From what I’ve heard about the real John Dillinger is that he was a rather colorful type, just a touch of a rascal country boy who liked to rob banks. Not the dark caricature that Depp portrays.

One more thing before I end, now, I’m not sure if it’s just the soundtrack they threw together for the trailer but, it don’t send me. I hope there’s some good period music in this film or I’ll be upset.

A group us mugs are plannin’ on seein’ this pic when it comes out in July. We’re goin’ to dress 30s and sit in one row… and we all will sound off the biggest and most sincere “Bronx Cheer” if we see anything we don’t feel accurate! lol

PS: And another thing... the radio you see them turn on is a 1936 Zenith! Great Cesar's Ghost, don't they know anything?

FYI, "Oxblood" was a 2008 Optimo color. Oh, and my guess for brim width is 2 1/4". I have a late 40s/early 50s Royal Stetson that has very similar dimensions to that hat.

Don't wish, just do!;) That's how I dress most of the time.

The hat is a 30s Borsalino and the top coat is 30s DB peaked lapels, and the suit under is a late 30s three piece wool. Stepping out of the Edison Building in Down Town LA.

Here's a shot of one of my favorite early 30s Stetson's.

The brim is about 2" 1/4 wide and the crown is over 5" tall. This is what you should be seeing in the new Depp flick!

Now, I do have to say one thing aside from my observations regarding some of the inaccuracies regarding "Public Enemies"... this shot is tough:

The hat Depp wears is sharp regardless of authenticity. The coat he wears comes on strong and I wish I owned it! lol

Now, I could be wrong about this but I heard that the principal car is a '33 Hudson Essex 8 Terraplane... which is correct for Dillinger. And I believe that Hudson folded the Essex line at the end of 1934 due to cuts to stay in the game during the Depression.

Here's a photo of Dillinger's '33 Essex today!

I hope it will be an enjoyable flick... and that it will breath some more interest into the Great Depression's fashion.:)

I'll leave it to you gents who have made a serious study of such matters to weigh in on the period accuracy (or inaccuracy) of the costumes and cars, etc., in this or any other period movie. It's good that people know these things, and I appreciate their willingness to share their knowledge.

I'm guessing the movie will be a hit, no matter how at odds with the facts of J. Dillinger's life and times it may be. It stars Johnny Depp, fer cryin' out loud. (Only a bit over half of the population carries a torch for him.) And it's a tale of a bank robber. (Banks and bankers aren't quite at the top of the public's list of most-esteemed people and institutions these days.) And, judging from what I've seen in the trailers, it's positively dripping with style -- the clothes, the locations, etc., etc.

So, what's that horizontal black thing showing at the 'V' in his waistcoat? Is he supposed to be wearing a flak jacket?...
I was wondering that too. Odd, that.

I really hope I'm not in the same cinema as you. There will be no end to the disgusting noises coming from your row, I'm sure. "John Dillinger didn't look like Johnny Depp! Nobody in the thirties looked that much like Christian Bale! What were they thinking?"
Please have some respect for others' desire to see (and hear) a movie. It's all well and good to take pleasure in recognizing anachronisms, but to make disruptive noises in a movie theater at details only off by a year or two is ridiculous and rude. I take movie watching seriously and abhor distractions in the cinema.

I hate it when they put modern pop music (UGH!) in period films.
I thought the movie A Knight's Tale got decidedly less interesting after the gleefully anachronistic music (David Bowie at a medieval ball = sweet!) gave way to standard movie score music. Also, The Sting employed ragtime music for a movie about the 1930s. By that time, ragtime was a couple of decades out of style. It's not really quite the same, since most of the music in the movie had been written by the time period in which the movie was set, but those tunes were not popular at all anymore in the 1930s. In the movie, though, it works perfectly, and I can't imagine the score any other way. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (a great film that I recently re-watched) features a cello on the soundtrack, played by the godlike Yo-Yo Ma, which is not quite a Chinese instrument (though it does come from a country famous for noodles), and for all I know may not even have existed in the time period of the movie. But the film is not harmed by the cello; on the contrary, I think I would have enjoyed it less if there were only period- and place-specific instruments.

I wonder why Optimo put an underwelt on it? Some say it's the closest to replicating the look of a Cavanagh Edge, but it doesn't even come close in the photo, so perhaps there was another reason?

Well, judging by your location and mine there ain't a china man’s chance we'll be sittin' in the same theater!

You take movies seriously, and I take HISTORY seriously which is more interesting then a “lets cast Johnny Depp in a gangster roll and make lots of money” type of movie. I would love to see an accurate story of who some of these people were and not the typical run of the mill villain and over generalization that these Hollywood types put on the Depression and the things that happened in those times.

Well, I've heard the same thing about the underwelt and Cavanagh Edge thing... I think they should have given it a raw edge if you ask me... since so many of those hats we love from the early Depression had raw edges.

Brad I think you should have made the hats for that movie... the one you wear in your avatar is spot on!;)

That poster is pretty cool looking with the hat - overcoat combo, but what amazes me is that photo with Depp in a scruffy shirt, ripped jeans and a hat. How he still manages to make it look cool is beyond me. But hey, he's Johnny Depp - I guess that explains it all.
