I can make ties!

Today I finished the first piece of clothing I ever made: A tie based on a 1930s pattern.

I made it from an old khaki military shirt with a 1950s sewing machine I got from my grandma. Of course there some small mistakes, but as it was the first time I ever sewed, I'm pretty satisfied with my work.

Pictures will follow as soon as I get the camera back!

Can't wait to see it. This is a project I've been considering myself, although I'd need a pattern for a 2.75" 60's tie and some way to just get a small amount of fabric.

Well I simply took a broken early/mid 1930s tie, cut of the seams and made a pattern.
Maybe that's all you can do, because I don't think you can buy tie patterns.

At the moment I awaiting 'real' tie fabric from a friendly lounger.

Actually, the sleeve patterns were part of the make do and mend stuff: you change the sleeves and you have a new pattern that looks different from the sleeves that were on it before.

Oh, I know. It was just amusing to see the cover for the pattern, all those arms. lol

Just took apart the skinny polyester tie. Surprisingly, it actually has decent canvas interlining that I could possibly use. I have a fair idea of how I can do this project now.

Question: Should I cut it on the bias, even if it's solid?

If the original was cut on the bias, cut the new one on the bias. Materials cut on the bias have a completely different drape and hang from those cut on the straight. I don't handle ties very much  but I can't ever remember seeing one cut on the straight. I wouldn't chance it, not for the first one.

I'd really like to take photo, but at the moment the camera out of the country, because my brother took it with on school trip to the USA. I'll see if I can find another one somewhere.

Henrik
