I, too, dislike my name. At least, though, I was named Karol-with-a-K.
Carol, which was most popular in the 1940's, means melody or song, specifically, it is now seen as a Christmas song. Karol-with-a-K means nothing, which is fine. I have the same name as the late pope, it is a male name in Eastern Europe, was most popular in the US as a girl's name in the 1930's - 50's.
Why couldn't I have been named after one of the bad girls in the bible? Now, those are names: Delilah, Jezebel, Bathsheba, Salome. Or after someone in classical antiquity: Antigone, Jocasta, Phaedra; or Shakespeare: Rosalind, Viola, Desdemona.
It always ranked in the top 1000 over the last 100 years but it became really popular way after I was born. No wonder I hear my name always bandied about when I am in stores and in public---usually by some woman scolding her child. :eusa_doh:
At least it means Just or True. Fairly apt considering I am always ferreting out the truth in any situation.
My son's name has always been in the top 50. Its number seven in the 90s. I got it from my father who was born in the 30s when it was number 40. Geez, an old name has become more popular than it once was. I suppose the meaning of the name is a little intimadating to a father who is correcting a child's behavior---God is my judge.
...Hmmm,...I'll go along with that.
Most popular from the 1910s through the 30s. Makes sense because I was named after the doctor that delivered me. I wish my parents had been more original though and given the subject a bit more thought,...it's not like they didn't know I was due to arrive.
My given name means God is gracious, and was never wildly popular:
1900's 235
1910's 297
1920's 424
1930's 481
1940's 444
1950's 568
1960's 534
1970's 330
1980's 259
1990's 436
It was most popular around 1900, which makes sense to me since that is when the ancestor I was named for lived. And it had another peak around the era when I got it!
The name I use means joy and has never been in the top thousand.
It depends on what the name is, and who called you it.
Gideon (Hebrew Judge and Fighter) properly pronounced : GEE-dowen as in Citroen. Common pronunciation if as: Giddy-yon
Old Testament Hero/Judge in Ancient Israel and may be found in Judges 6-8
((approximately 1244BCE to 879 BCE)).
With 300 personally selected by strict rules put down by an angel of God, Gideon defeated both of the armies of the East(the Midianites and the Amalekites) roughly one hundred times their number, via the means of carrying torches contained in clay vessels and rams horns to create a distraction and disarray; with wich they infiltrated and then attacked the superior force, killing or routing them.
Gideon appears to have done the Frank Miller thing a bit earlier and a little further east than Leonidas and the Spartans. Still. Persians, Midianites, Amalekites, who can tell the difference, except for the shade of lip gloss?
Still used fairly frequently in the West, it is a solid masculine name, with no ambiguity.
Common among Jewish persons, particularly in Israel.
Mine is Nicoletta and my middle name is Rose. Rose was popular in the early 1900's, but I don't think Nicoletta has ever been popular in this country, it is popular in Italy though.
It didn't even really rank until the 40's, but it was most popular in the 80's. How fitting that I was born in 87 then! Even then it wasn't too popular! I totally hate my name.
