How to use a hat brush?

The instructions for the Stetson Saxon contains the following regarding hat care: For a fur felt hat. use a soft brush starting at the left side of the hat and brushing counter-clockwise towards the back. I am guessing that this is to prevent some sort of wear or damage to the integrity of the finish of the felt. Anyone on the forum care to correct and/or educate me on this quite specific subject?

Would be good to know if I've been doing it right. I start anywhere topside and brush across the surface in a counterclockwise direction. I also give a little "lift" at the end of the stroke to help take off any persistent lint. I do this to the crown, top and underside of the brim.

Counter clockwise on top, clockwise on the bottom. Because that's the way the felt knaps.
