speaking of gas tanks and hats...does anyone have any idea what these large collections would be worth if placed at auction...like antiques roadshow style?

there is clearly historic significance here;, popped into my mind.

really great looking collections.

That is really a great question.

I have not seen such an effort made with hats, and I have followed (catalog subscriptions) most of the larger antique houses over the last ten years. First, it goes without saying that your best return will be through a larger, high-visibility auction house, but you will have to 'sell' your lot idea to one of their consignment specialists. If you can help them see the value, you'll get better 'packaging' in their catalog/website - for instance, I've seen great lots that received poor ending bids, with high-end items 'lost' in a large photo that included everything. If you promote your lot well, you might get your hats broken up into smaller group photos, where things will stand out. Getting labels, etc, displayed is not a given either.

I've gone through the above with a gorgeous pre-1945 baseball uniform collection which was rejected because I dealt with someone who thought anything less than major leagues had no value, and also seen very nice lots of 1800's baseball team cabinets go cheap because the lot photos/descriptions were poor. If you (or anyone else) decides to try something with hats, give me a holler and I'll be glad to help.

Edited to add: important to know your audience - in this case it would be people who planned to break up the collection and re-sell, or better still: wealthy collectors who kill several birds with one stone. I have known many wealthy collectors (photographs, baseball memorabilia, pool cues) who hated to buy anything through ebay and would only use auction houses, or a middleman on a specialty classifieds site such as this one. You can imagine how difficult it is for such a person to obtain certain items.

Thanks, guys. For all practical purposes, the collection's done, so as promised, I'll quite being a hat-hog and concentrate on the web-site. By sheer luck, that Stetsonian ended up being an 'Extra Quality' as well, filling the last gap. I picked these all up in under a year, so they are definitely out there to be had.

Amazing collection, for sure! I can't actually imagine going after anything as single-mindedly as that.

I just counted my 'collection'. Heck, I hate to actually use that word now!

I have:

12 felt hats, 10 vintage and 2 custom-made.

8 straw hats, 6 vintage and 2 modern.

2 Western (cowboy) hats, both felt.

I clearly have a long way to go before I have a *real* collection.

The best I can say is that five of the ten vintage dress-weight hats are ones I've saved from almost certain doom (serious cleaning, rebuilding, etc).

I have been waiting for the updated photo and I have to say that if I could own any hat collection it would be yours Scott. You have some amazing hats and have provided some great insight on them. I have lost one or two (or several) hats to you but I always know that you will provide great pictures and info on them. Truly great stuff, wear them all in health!

Thanks Hollis - much appreciated. Luckily you and I have similar tastes AND the same odd head-size, so I'll let you know when I find duplicates. The unfortunate thing about the current collection is that I'm unprepared to part with any of them, meaning no room for additional incomings. No choice but to buy a bigger place.
