Interesting thread, and great collection Jimmy.

I make it a point not to count some of the things I have, like hats, pairs of shoes and fountain pens. I find that knowing how many of something I have inhibits future purchases.;)

I just laid off a good portion of my collection. Twenty-four are left of which another seven will have to go. I just don't want to keep things I have no use for any longer, especially hats. Hats should be worn, not just collected and hidden away in the closet (well, that's my opinion anyway).

I'll only keep the hats I really like to wear (with specific proportions) and get rid of the others, which are mostly stingy brimmed specimen with low, tapered crowns, back from the time when I didn't really knew what I was out for.

But...of course I'll replenish my stock over time...just with a little more care and attention to detail! :D

This is my method from now on as well...

Amazing, Jimmy. I'm glad you finally got around to post on this thread I opened a while ago with the sole purpose of admiring collections like yours, gather amazing ideas to display them and drool for a little while over our keyboards. :eusa_clap

Where do you have your boxes?

First off -- thanks, Aureliano. And thanks, Gents, for the very nice comments. :)

Most of the hats that I have fished out of the 'Bay have not come with boxes. But the boxes I do have (including those I have collected) are in storage, with a few out on display. ;)

flute -- in order to maximize closet space, we customized a couple of closets a few years ago -- the components for this hat project were gathered from that effort. The verticals are slotted and hang on the horizontal board, which has a beveled edge. Here's how it works:

You might want to investigate custom closet outfits for these kinds of components. Of course, you can also do an installation that simply has horizontal boards running across more standard types of metal supports, which are readily available.

In any event, what I am loving about this set-up is that it allows me to see and appreciate these lids, and to pick just the right one to wear on any given day. ;)

Cheers,
JtL

Of course not.
(But you already knew the answer to that question.)

As to how many hats do I own?,... currently 2. Both westerns, including one mighty fine Resistol that I was danged lucky to find. Hard to find any sort of vintage hat at an affordable price in my size. :(
I have owned probably close to 60 or so hats of all kinds that I passed on to others.[angel]

Well, if we're talking fedoras, I own one fur felt (Akubra Federation IV), one wool felt (Jaxon C-Crown Crushable, it was my starter hat), and one Panama (cheap, likely a shantung immitation by Ultrafinopanamahats). I hope to next acquire an Akubra Campdraft in the silverbelly color, or a relatively stingy-brimmed (not very stingy, but maybe 2 inches) light grey trilby with a black ribbon, if I can find one like this for a decent price, with good quality.

Last question: Does this mean the entire shelving unit is removable, since it's not mounted directly to the wall (save for the beveled edge mounts)?

Nice work.
flute

Hey, flute --

Just saw this post. Yes, you are correct -- only the beveled horizontal component is mounted to the wall. Otherwise, everything else is completely removable.

And thanks! (Mrs. Lid gets all the credit on this one ;)).

Cheers,
