How do folks react to your hat wearing?

Around here it is very common to see middle age and older men (like me) wearing hats. I see a lot of wool outback style hats and inexpensive looking straw hats but seldom see shorter brim fedoras. Since I'm normally wearing various silver belly fur felt hats (pinched front/3" brim), if anybody says anything, it's always complimentary. The ladies at the library were recently taking ID photos of all the patrons. They made me wear my hat for the photo so they would recognize me?

Today I got a cool compliment.

Today after church I went to a friend's graduation party back in the old church I went to when I was younger. I as wearing a navy sportjacket, a borsalino hat, brown trousers with brown gunboats. Anyways, they have a playground over there and me and a friend went there to check up on his nephews. They were swinging on a tire and we played around with them that it was our turn. One of the girls told us that we were big kids but one of the boys corrected her and said that I'm an adult and my friend looks like a kid

My dentist's office was recently taking ID photos of all their patients to put in their new computer system. After my dental work the dental assistant asked me to put my hat back on before she took the picture!

Before I begin, I'm fairly new around these parts, though I've been an avid reader of the Fedora Lounge for a few years.

I live and work in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where the summers get as hot as hell. I generally say that there are two seasons here, hot and hotter, so for me a hat is essential. I seem to get nods of approval from most Emiratis (the locals/citizens) as many of them have travelled to and studied in western countries so some of them even strike up conversations with me based on my hat, and the Philipinos and Nepalese also often compliment me. However the majority of people here behave as though they have never seen anyone in a hat before. With reactions ranging from staring to people pointing and laughing out loudly (this happens each time I walk down a particular road). Though the UAE is a real melting pot with Emiratis (citizens) only making up around 11% of the population, the majority of people here aren't very open minded based purely on their reactions which can generally be described as childish at best. The worst reactions come from people of an age group that should know much better.
I own three hats which are all Akubras with the brims flattened and generally creased as fedoras - Cattleman, Bushman, and Coober Pedy.
The reactions I get will not stop me from wearing hats, and in fact I'm baffled as to why more people don't wear them given the harsh sun out here. I am not a follower so they can continue to rudely stare, point and laugh, and I will continue to enjoy wearing my hats and protecting my head from the harsh sun.

I've noticed a couple of people are calling me Pharell Willams

This was bound to happen. People out there are so predictable with their narrow-minded, tiny pop-cultural reference pools.

I've noticed a couple of people are calling me Pharell Willams and I'm wearing my Fed IV. I'd much rather be called Indiana Jones.

Who's Pharell Williams? I think most if not all of us have heard of Indiana Jones, even with a little bit of help from people passing us, by now, but I don't know who that guy is. What is he, a singer or a rapper? What's his controversy? I guess I'm going to read a bit about him, anyway.

That's exactly what I was thinking, but you worded it far more politely than I would have. ;)

I'm just baffled by the shear lack of.... something something when even my outfit was screaming Indiana Jones. It was a Fed IV and I was wearing a tan shirt and khaki pants.

I don't know who he is. In general, he's a "singer" who wears this kind of hat. I don't recall what kind it was, but it's kinda like something a park ranger would probably wear. There's talk about in under the GRAMMY HAT's thread. Last I read, it was mainly talking about his hat. Not that there's anything wrong with his hat. It's just the way he went about the hat. It looked like it didn't belong with his wardrobe.

Worst of all on ebay (at least the German ebay) there is this annoying "fashion guide" on the start page:
"Get the Pharrel Williams Look for Summer"... directing you to hats, bow ties, work-shirts, Red wing boots and tuxedo-shirts (to be combined with shorts). :eusa_doh:

http://www.ebay.com/cln/kollektionsteam-fashion/Happy-im-Pharrell-Look/85674436012

"[...] With secure style the superstar recycles and combines trends from different eras. This way fashion classics like hats and tuxedo shirts sound suddenly as fresh as a modern camoflage-look or heavy boots."

being a music nut i known of Pharell
for quite a few years now as he is mostly know as a music producer. But he has alway wore hats just like Mr. Depp. In fact the Hat industry just voted him hat wearer of the year. As with Indy it gets people looking at wearing a hat which is a good thing in my book.
