Is it STILL baseball season? Ugh.

Just a minute there BUDDY! :rage:

I LOVE baseball, and that is from someone who couldn't tell you squat about what inning the fifty yard line shot was made into the hoop just a few years ago :p !

What OTHER sport can you listen to on the RADIO and "see" the game clearly? Not f-o-o-t-b-a-l-l....where they say "there's the pass, and it's caught, and 10 guys have piled on him and we can't tell what happened" thing!

You also remember, men in suits, and ladies in dresses. Straw or Felt hats around the entire stadium. It is a game of strategy and skill. And Luck.

Oh I like football, but not like the American Calssic Game!

The Yankee's are always post-season favorites but the starting rotation sucks. If they can keep a lead until Mariano Rivera comes out in relief, they have the game locked up - his lifetime post-season ERA is under 1.00.

However - I don't think Chicago is going to be mowed down by New York or the Angels - they'll be close no matter who they play. On paper, New York and Boston very closely resemble each other this year, long on offense, NO starting rotation worth the name. Plus the White Sox always play the Yankee's strong. The Angels are a west coast team, typically the bane of our existence, but the Angels did not give us too much trouble this year, so I think it's a wash. Whoever we play, we'll give a something to think about.

GO SOX!

I'm with you, Vanessa!
I'm also happy to see the Astros advance. The only team that I am more tired of than the Braves is the Yankees. And speaking of the Yankees and being tired, whomever wins the Yankees/Angels series is going to be awfully tired before they face the White Sox! Hopefully they'll go 18 innings too!

On paper, the Cardinals are the best team in Baseball this season, and I think they are (and should be) heavily favored to reach the series - even with Astros starting pitching being so good. The Cardinals pitching is tops too and their offense is better. Should be a good matchup but I expect the same outcome as last year; we'll see!

However, LaRussa seems to bungle things in the post season, at least in the Series.

Once again, GO SOX!

The Yankees rotation "sucks" (check out Johnson's record and especially those of Wang, Small, and Chacon)? Look at the White Sox's second half and say that again,
Yeah, I know, the rest of the country hates the Yankees (it seems New York in general), but we love 'em here and don't really give a toss what the rest of the world thinks.
"On paper" means absolutely nothing in baseball (look at the Mets with their failure the past few years or the Braves with their success this year), and especially in October. In regards to the Yankees blueprint resembling the Red Sox, you are way off. Take a second look. Not only do the Yankees have an excellent bullpen (the Bosox lacked one all year, not even a closer), but they scrapped together an very decent rotation (obviously the Sox didn't).In addition the Yankees steal bases, Red Sox don't. Granted, the Yanks don't have the Astro's awesome rotation, but I'll put Wang, Johnson, Mussina, Chacon (with Small, Gordon, Leiter, and Rivera in the wings) against the White Sox's any day. The Yankees are down 5-2 as I type this with Johnson just having taken over from Mussina, I hope they can pull it out but who knows...We'll see. Kudos to the White Sox for skirting disaster and winning their division, but if the Yanks can't pull it out I'm rootin' for the Astros.

Well, sorry NYC old pal, but the Yanks are out! It was a good series with the Angels though. With the beat up starters of the Angels, the Sox should do this, but we'll see. If they play like the first half Sox, they'll crush everybody. If they play like the second half...

As far as our disagreements vis a vis baseball philosophies go, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

GO SOX!

So what did everyone think of that call in the 9th inning? (I was busy watching Lost - so had to wait for SportsCenter reruns).

IF the ball hit the ground (and I haven't seen any replays of the incident), then not only did the umpire make the right call, he did the right thing by calling the third strike but not calling the batter "out", since the third strike must be caught cleanly or the batter has to be tagged or thrown out at first. Again, IF the ball hits the ground, the batter isn't out without a tag, even though it's the third strike.

From what I've heard of the incident, replays showed the ball probably didn't hit the ground. However, the ump made the call and, since there was no other ump with a better view to overrule him (and "overrule" isn't really accurate - "advise him that the call needed to be changed" would be more correct) then he had to stick by his call.

Obviously, in this case, the batter knew the rule and the (rookie?) catcher did not. The batter did what he was supposed to do in that situation. Whether the ump's call was bad or good, the catcher is the one who really blew it by not making sure of the out before tossing the ball toward the mound and leaving the field.

He caught it. The replays have made this quite clear. Bad call.
Human error is something we all succumb to. However Umpire Doug Eddings has put his arrogance, vanity, and stupidity on parade in front of the entire nation by still insisting he was made the right call. Embarrassing.
