I spoke to a friend of mine who lives in DFW, and both of her girls wore mums to homecoming last night...we grew up in Cincinnati and had never heard of such a thing. I do recall buying tacky wrist corsages for my dates, but never mums.
I have never heard of high school homecomings before, but it makes sense that it would be more a southern thing. The association between homecoming and football tho is strong. Most northern colleges will have a homecoming, associated with a football game on a (hopefully) perfect fall day in October. The opponent is generally selected to be an easy fall guy. Not good to lose the homecoming weekend game!
Homecoming involves much hokey hoopla, and can be loads of fun. A great, and typically American tradition!
From what I recall of high school, homecoming was the fall dance, there was one around Christmas, and a spring dance for underclassmen/prom for seniors. The girls' schools had several dances too...
My main recollections, fuzzy as they are, involve trying to get drunk prior to the dance, and sneak in enough alcohol to maintain the buzz during the dance.
They have homecomings here as one sometimes sees the youngsters in formal wear. I never cared for such things, being the proverbial outcast as I am lol , so never pay attention to any of the details of the thing.
