Size tag is missing......only blocking tag present......it is labeled a "Royal Deluxe". It has No liner protection and has stars in the crest.....
M
Yeah this could be as early as the '40's. The tags on the inside were used from the '40's to the mid '50's, and the Royal Deluxe convention was pretty consistent. My stetson homburgs from the '50's look virtually the same as yours on the inside except they have liner protectors -- not sure if that's an indicator? Excellent homburg!

Here is as good as I can get on the tag.....

Yes, the change over to liner protectors and the maple leaf crest still confounds me for dating.......,

The close up def shows a date range from 1940-55 based on the block tag. The lack of liner protector makes me think late '40's to early '50's? Either way, she's maintained well over the last several decades. I love the color! You scored with this one.

Yes.....late 40's early 50's.....either way as you say she has aged quite well indeed. And the color is just awesome...........I am VERY happy with this find!!
Thanks for all your knowledge, that is one of the things I really like about "the Lounge".

M

Size tag is missing......only blocking tag present......it is labeled a "Royal Deluxe" no referance to "Imperial ". It has No liner protection and has stars in the crest.....I really get confused over the change over to maple leaf from the stars and the liner crown protection. The crest was evidently heavily gold embossed.
M
Fantastic Homburg! Now that's a hat! Very good, you!

Ok, here is my latest! An actual Homburg (with taped curled brim) as opposed to the "Lord's hat" in the same style with raw edge (of which I own 2). This is my first proper Homburg. I THINK from the 40's but perhaps you can let me know. Any information on dating this beauty will be MUCH appreciated. GREAT condition, not a flaw in the felt or ribbon/bound edge anywhere! And it is in a great shade of BROWN!!
It does have a wide 1 7/8 taped brown sweat. Only the retailers name is debossed in gold. As usual for these older hats much color has flaked off of the reed. While the lining is in great condition much of the gold leaf has come off. Crest has the stars. WIDE brim of over 2 inches to the curl. Crown is 5 inches to the dent (6" open crown). Overall a really great large imposing hat I am pleased to have, and I can now wear (it was sold as a 7 1/2 but is really a 7 3/4 as the blocking label reveals.....so after a bit of foam shimming....). It came with only the center dent so I just HAD to put in a pinch.........
Cheers,
M

Royal Stetson DeLuxe. Based on my research around here on liners and crests, it looks to be from the late '40s or early '50s.

It's in beautiful shape. One moth nibble right on the inside of the brim on the bow side is the only damage to the felt that I have found.

Photos taken today. The final two in the early morning, the rest around 12:00 EST.

I enjoy every photo you posted of this great Homburg. That color combo is what I love the most.

I bought this Julius Garfinckel & Co. department store branded homburg 3 to 4 years ago.

Until recently, it sat in its box. The reason: whomever creased it years back, put the crease in about 10 degrees off center. The diagonal tilt drove me nuts but I was too timid to mess with it to try to resolve the problem. I put sending it off to a professional for resolution onto my gonna list.

A few weeks ago, I pulled it out and decided to mess around with it myself. After steam and some being rough (but not too rough) with it, the problem is largely resolved, though the felt exhibits some recidivistic tendencies.

The impression that I get is that it dates from no later than the forties. I base that on liner, sweatband and general construction quality. Of course, I readily admit my fallibility, so if anyone has other ideas, please give me the guidance.

Garfinckel's was the cream of the crop as far as DC department stores went. The main store was located across from the Willard Hotel. For quite some time it owned Brooks Brothers and Lord & Taylor's. The company finally went bankrupt in the 1990s. I occasionally visited one of its satellite locations when I was a child.

Julius Garfinckel was, from all accounts that I have read, an exceptional man. Kind, service oriented, and philanthropic. Yet he largely remained outside of DC's political and social hubbub. He remained a bachelor until his 1936 (if memory serves me) death. His favorite pastime was riding his horse in Rock Creek park. And he used to go riding there with Calvin Coolidge.

The felt quality and general construction is stupendous. I'm dying to know the company that Garfinckel's contracted with for the production of its hats during that period. The selling price was $12.50.

Enough babbling...
