Saturday evening unplanned meant I could sit on the dock and deck and enjoy a couple of Surley Delicious IPA's. Finally hungry I fixed a pasta dinner with spicy buffalo sausage, basil, spinach and Parmesan cheese. A Bent Paddle (Duluth , MN brewer) Black IPA. This black IPA is a thinner version of a hoppy Schwarzbier. I had to look up Schwarzbier, literally “black beer,” to find that it is a black lager with a light to medium body and a moderate to high bitterness. It paired well and I enjoyed the taste.

Utica Club....now there's a beer I haven't had in years and miss. A good friend from back home has in-laws from Utica, and he always brought back a stash on his visits from there. Nice to see it being represented here on the Lounge. Cheers.

Perfect for some deck time sipping on my usual Pilsner made all the more special because it is being drank from a great piece of vintage glass ware that arrived in the mail yesterday. I know, different times with mail arriving on the holidays but I’m thankful they were out and I am especially grateful to @Hurricane Jack for sending me this early birthday gift. Much appreciated. It takes top spot in my PBR paraphernalia.

To me drinking can be such a relaxing sensory experience & visual is certainly part of that. I like the color thru the glass in the pic very much.

To me drinking can be such a relaxing sensory experience & visual is certainly part of that. I like the color thru the glass in the pic very much. Happy Birthday coming up, BB!

A long day that is better now that my dog and I are strolling around outside listening to the neighborhood owl. The owl is loud and proud tonight. I am enjoying a Founders Porter. This is my go to Porter beer. The balance of bitterness and sweet "porter" taste makes this well crafted for sipping. The hops blend has this a dry tight finish.

Congrats on the upcoming birthday, Cuz...and sincerest best wishes for very many more. Jack did you right with that great gift. It frames Milwaukee's finest like fine art should be. That other set of frames on the table are pretty museum worthy, too.

A long day that is better now that my dog and I are strolling around outside listening to the neighborhood owl. The owl is loud and proud tonight.

I have an owl living in the woods on my property. My dog & I hear it most often in the early mornings. It's really surreal when it's a foggy morning. We often hear the train whistle passing thru the little town in the distance too.

Back OT I was just reading how covid is killing the bar business, & especially those not being allowed to reopen due to lack of food sales.

Picked up a 12’er in cans of Sierra Nevada Torpedo based on DD’s post in another thread. It seems to have a good balance between the conifer & pines producing hops which I prefer, & the citrus hops. Something on the order of Dogfish Head IPA. Since I usually don’t stop just at one, too much citrus attacks my stomach. One thing I have found to snack on that goes well with IPA's is a tart Swiss cheese. YMMV.

I also bought a 6’er of 4 Hands Brewing Cast Iron Brown Ale, an oatmeal Ale I like. Passed up Moosehead Lager on sale in a 12’er.

I agree Jack that the citrus hops have a maximum tolerance. I find that my citrus hops tolerance is varies predictably with the day temperature. This past summer when the opportunity arose, I could sip a couple of citrus hopped beverages. The cooler temps now have me reaching for other options. I will have to consider Nevada Torpedo. I have not sampled any of the beer from that brewery. My local liquor stores do not get the option to stock Dogfish anymore. I did not ask why. I may have to work an order for some coming up for the Thanksgiving period.

Tonight I am sipping a big taste on a cool 43'f evening. I did some trading and received a couple Goose Island Bourbon Country Kentucky Fog Stouts. https://www.gooseisland.com/beers/barrel-house-beers/bourbon-county-kentucky-fog-stout Tonight I am sampling the American Imperial Stout. The ABV is 14.7%. The beer pours and leaves a ring not the lace that some Stouts have. It is truly a decadent beer - lots of taste that changes thought the glass. It has a lot of taste, but mellows out on the swallow. The beer does not taste carbonated, but has a tingle of alcohol with every taste. A very decadent tasting beer. It is not a rare beer, but is crazy tasty. I will have to stock some for moments of desired stout decadence.

It is truly a decadent beer - lots of taste that changes thought the glass. It has a lot of taste, but mellows out on the swallow. The beer does not taste carbonated, but has a tingle of alcohol with every taste.

Good review Eric! I'll be looking for that one & others in the series since I'm on a mission to sample beers >12% ABV.

El jefe and the beer look swell tonight. What a hat! Do you recommend this brown ale? I have not really focused on tasting many brown ales.

Tonight I am sipping a Great Lakes Brewing Edmond Fitzgerald Porter. https://www.greatlakesbrewing.com/edmund-fitzgerald

This porter finishes with a bitter hop taste than the Founders Porter which I recall finishes a bit sweeter. For a Porter it drinks with a lighter body than many porters but with a big taste profile. The taste appears deeper when it warms up, but it still drinks as a light body porter. Easy drinking beer. I taste this beer and think of a tastier Bell's Porter.

(Nov. 10 the date, 45 years ago that the Edmund Fitzgerald was lost "when the gales of November came early.")

This particular Brown Ale is probably nothing special. I get Oats & coffee out of it mostly. It's not sweet tasting, I get just a touch of maybe a milk chocolate in the aftertaste. It's something I won't buy often, will probably take it off my necessity list, but would buy again on sale in the fall, etc.

In school we studied extensively the structural integrity of the Fitz along with its identical companion ship, the Edgar B. Speers.

Material science classes were my favs as an undergrad. Sounds like an interesting study.

Material science classes were my favs as an undergrad. Sounds like an interesting study.

It was a structural engineering class. Both the Fitz which was owned by Bethlehem Steel & the Edgar B. Speer which was owned by US Steel in part, were riveted hulls instead of welded hulls. The Fitz would have still sunk taking on the amount of water thru the hatches that it did, but it would have never broken apart & sunk as quickly as it did if it was a welded hull.

Although it never had a mishap the Speer was oddly drydocked just a few short yrs after the breakup of the Fitz. It sat in drydock for some yrs before being sold for scrap value, never to be used again.
